The most plausible reason I have heard was from Williamson: 1) they know they will stink and all the QB's stink 2) It is easier to go with Watson, stink, then bench him for Shadeur then to go the other way (start Shadeur, stink, then bring in Watson). The only actual positive thought was that Watson checks it down alot at this point and since they invested in offensive skill positions it could be somewhat effective, rather than Shadeur who tends to hold the ball.

I think it could also mean that the new coach came in and said to everyone "I don't care what how have or haven't done in the past, I will chose the starter based on what happens by what I see with my own eyes this offseason".

It's CLE, so I could certainly see this decision being made for stupid reasons. But I think the quote above is absolutely the right thing to say to people when you're the new boss.

ETA: I listened to part of that interview and it could have been someone off the street for all she knew. She dodged most of the questions and when someone asked her if she could explain X or Y, you could hear her conversing with someone else and then saying "not at this time".

I trust the browns will screw up a good opportunity but:

they had two good drafts in a row...and..

they traded an edge rusher at an age when edge rushers start losing their burst (edge rushers need a burst and there aren't many 30 or older that remain elite)

and traded him for a nice haul. Assuming Garrett declines as I expect, then Garrett-for-Verse would have been an even trade.

and yet they got all those draft picks on top of that.

My issue isn't the Press Conference. As the likes of @Bubbahotep, @jeh1856 and @KnoxVegasSteel have all alluded to, there is no accountability here. That shirt she is wearing is my evidence. Both her and the Browns know exactly what they are getting at.

 

Andrew Berry is literally doing God's Work in Cleveland. He is solely the main reason why the Browns haven't gone belly up completely. From restructuring the Watson Contract to your point about having great drafts, Berry is the literal definition of a rising tide that lifts all boats. If anything, Andrew Berry is arguably the most underrated GM in all of Football.


The issue is, those waters are polluted to hell.
