The United States is not a few US companies are. Remember a few months ago when people were cheering all the tankers lining up in the gulf? That does us no good at all. It’s just Exxon/chevron etc making more money

 

Here’s what I don’t understand.The United States gets essentially 0% of its oil from Iran, and our domestic supply hasn’t changed. Oil is supposed to be a supply-and-demand game, right? So why are gas prices still so high in the USA?People say oil is priced on the global market. Why are we still tied to that system?The United States is the world’s largest oil producer and a net exporter of petroleum overall. I’m not an expert on this, but it almost feels like the USA is somehow carrying or subsidizing other nations that rely on oil from different parts of the world.Can someone explain why global events (like those involving Iran) still drive up prices at the pump here, even though our own production and supply situation hasn’t

This isn’t a USA supply issue. It’s politics. That’s why gas near you is so expensive. Enjoy California gas prices.

Joel - jeh isn't anywhere near California - he's in PA as far as I know. But I am and it's mind boggling and frustrating. I realize the taxes out here are the main culprits but I share your frustration yet also realize the price equation doesn't make sense from a logic standpoint. Can the Venezuela oil deal really lower gas prices if they're set globally? I don't know.

I don’t know where the massively ignorant JEH is located, whether he went to college, or exactly where he lives. I think he mentioned some small town in California. He can clarify if he wishes.But the deal the United States made with Venezuela can absolutely lower our price of gas. We help them with transportation, drilling for new oil, and refining it. They may give us crude at a lower cost when we need it.What I do know is that getting goods to market—meat, bread, and other groceries—has gone way up because of the price of gas. Iran is breaking. I predict they will offer a deal soon if they want to make money. If they stay their course, other refiners and pipelines around the world are already being built.

Start with gas. California averages about $5.74 a gallon. The national average is about $4.12. That gap is not a mystery. California piles taxes and special-blend rules onto an essential product. Gas is not a luxury. It is how people get to work, how food gets to stores, and how freight moves. When fuel costs more, groceries, retail goods, shipping, and parts of the utility bill cost more too.Use a low estimate. A 14-gallon fill-up, three times a month, is 42 gallons. At $1.62 above the U.S. average, that is about $68 extra per car, per month. Many households have two cars. Many drive more than three tanks. The real number is higher.Then look at the rest of the basket. California groceries run a bit above the national average. Utilities, especially electricity, run far above it. Housing is the killer. California housing costs about 1.5× to 2× the rest of the country. The July 2026 median listing price was about $744,750. In many other states the same figure is $260,000 to $500,000. For a normal household, buying a home in California is slipping out of reach, especially with mortgage rates still high.Renters are not escaping. Census-style median gross rent in California has been reported around $2,104, among the highest in the country. If you cannot buy, you drain your paycheck on rent and then pay more for gas, food, and power.The usual reply is that you “get so much in state services.” That deal looks better if you live on the receiving end of those services. But a $497 billion pile, plus internal budget borrowing, an unpaid federal unemployment loan, and giant pension promises, is not a clean balance sheet. Who wants to keep buying that story forever? NIMBY used to mean “not in my backyard.” The new version is NIMS: Not in my state.

Times are hard. Here is discounted housing, discounted transit, discounted everything paid for by “the rich” and by whoever has not left yet. The problem is arithmetic. A large share of the tax base sits in a thin slice of high earners. If those households leave, the services do not get cheaper. The remaining taxpayers get squeezed harder.New York City is the warning light. A huge share of its income-tax revenue comes from a small number of high-earning families. Chase even a fraction of them out and the budget hole gets worse, not better. Watch high-end real estate: money has been moving toward Florida, Texas, and Tennessee. These are not your father’s Democrats, and they are not even the Democrats of ten years ago. They are using the party label while running a different project: expand the constituency that receives, shrink the constituency that pays, and call the result compassion.California can keep taxing gas, housing, and work. It cannot keep the people who fund the system if the deal is: pay more, own less, and listen to a lecture. These are not you fathers Democrats or even Democrats from 20 years ago. They are socialist highjacking the Democratic Party's name.
