    1. Hindsight is 20/20 and Jones was not a reach, just didn't work out for us, and that may end up being coaching.

    2. We needed secondary help for sure but we may have needed O-line help more.

    3. It is certainly not a given that Thieneman will be a star.

Graham likely plays far less single high safety than the Steelers have last few years. That’s gonna make the safety positions a bit less difficult to execute each play.

Ramsay and Brisker should hold it down until Elliot is healthy.

In what world is any safety not named Polamalu more important than an OT? Drafting even an above average safety over a mediocre OT would’ve been criminal negligence in the past draft.

Jack Driscoll being the third depth OT is unusual.

and it is certainly not a given that Max will even be a starter. So who do you gamble on? That's the question. I believe safety is the biggest need. But opinions vary. I'm hoping the new coaching staff will be able to coach him up into a good starter. But from the past I have no confidence that this will happen.

If they bring back Roberts, who do you think he replaces on this LB corps? Or is the DL nobody has heard of saving his spot?

Jobity might only be on the roster because Joseph-Day has been injured.

    This.

All draft picks are bets on future performance. Jones had physical skill that made him a good bet. He fell to us because he was very raw. He was a swing for the fences type pick. Which I personally like better than the Jarvis Jones type picks (low floor / low ceiling). The reasoning for picking Jones was basically the same as for picking TJ. Physically gifted. Plays a critically important position. Raw. Home run if it works out.

We did need secondary and OL help. We addressed the secondary with the Porter pick at 32. This was a great pick. There was little to no drop off between the 1st round CBs and Porter. IIRC, the drop off at OT prospect was much bigger. But I could be wrong.

We have obvious issues at WR until we see Metcalf and Pittman play, and Wilson needs to step up yesterday!
We have what we have at O-line
We may have the best TE room in the league again, let's hope the coaches find a way to use them this time around!
Special teams "appears" to be weak at return protection, I've yet to see a good lane, time/technique should help.
The defense is very strong as long as father time doesn't smack us upside the head, and the secondary is a bit brittle.

In summary: If AR stays upright this could come together nicely!

Just like vampires need a stake through the heart to kill them, this zombie will simply require a couple playoff wins.:smiley1:

He’s not a huge project, Max has elite traits and by all accounts a very quick learner and natural at the position. Whether fans like it or not, the Steelers have a plan and that plan starts up front and not at the backend. They had some misfortune with Jones and the injury who seemed to be on the right path after some questionable handling of him in his development. That forced them to use another pick on a tackle.

Football games are won up front, dominating the trenches is more important IMO to winning football games. We’ve seen that with multiple SB winners recently just absolutely manhandling the other team.

Thats what the Steelers are trying to build, thats why Weidl is here.

With Broderick getting injured last year I don't blame them for taking a tackle this year.

I wouldn't be celebrating just yet if I were you the 53 isn't set before the season opener ;). McCollum only made it because they traded Broderick.

We also desperately needed OTs...unless we were OK with Dan Moore?

Safety is a much less premium position. And you try to take guys at high value positions in the 1st round.

I didn't look, but my guess is that S is like C in that they are classed as "secondary" and "OL" for the purposes of the 5th year option.

We don't see many C drafted in the first because you essentially can't use the 5th year option on them. Because you aren't going to pay a C (even if they are very good) like an elite LT.

My guess is a similar thing happens at S, where you have to pay them like a CB on the option. But I bet the different in contracts for the top S and top CB isn't as wide as C vs LT (and there probably are some RTs in the calculation too).

I would have been fine with picking Thieneman.

But after ignoring the OL for so long, I was also excited that we took a tackle high. Even if there were going to be question marks for an OT that was around when we picked.

It wasn't a bad bet IMO. It just didn't pay out.

I think a similar bet on Troy F looks like it's going to work out. And we made a similar bet on TJ too.

Roman Wilson is a #1 on the depth chart? :confused1:

AR will have his head on a pike before the 2nd half vs Falcons... if he runs a wrong route.

Yep, there was no thought of taking a safety in the first round for the Steelers it was going to be receiver or OL.

I agree with him though but I'm just a fan on a message board, I would've taken the chance and cut Howard to bring him back to the practice squad.

It's just too early to be sure of that. I agree the guy looks like a great pick, solid character, incredible skill, quick learner, etc. but he is yet to play a game.

You dont cut a potential franchise QB when you know your current QB is retiring after this year. The only QB that could have been cut this year was Rudolph simply because you already know what he brings to the table. If Howard or Allar are the future QB's here, MM had no choice but to keep all 4 this year.

If Rudolph didnt perform he would have been trade bait or cut, but MM liked what he saw and at that point the decision to keep all 4 was made.
