The only surprise there for me is Nichols especially considering Johnson has been traded

Edit: I see another OP was wondering the same thing.. Must be the special teams

He was going to be the starting slot corner (I'd assume they paid Jamel Dean to be CB2 next to JPJ) anyways. That is probably where he best fits at this stage of his career anyways. Now he probably sees a lot of time at S until we are healthy and gives Samuel a shot to play a bit in the nickel.

Maybe it's a joke. I like Allar, but it goes without saying he actually has to do something consistently good in a starter position before we give him a franchise QB tag

You are assuming he will be healthy then, which is a dubious assumption with Elliott. They also need someone while he is out. Poor safety play plagued the defense all through 2025. Khan failed to do enough to address the problem, seemingly, and foolishly, counting on Elliott's return.

By the way, the guy the Steelers should have taken in the first round, Dillon Thieneman, will open the season as a starting safety for the Bears. Meanwhile, the guy the Steelers did take doesn't look at all ready for the NFL.

Well, coaches feel differently that Jenkins can fill in until Elliot returns. And they want to get Spears Jennings on the field. I am ok with it, and then a fresh Elliot can come in and then you have 3 ready safeties (ideally), not including Brisker

This was my thoughts. Hamstrung injuries like to reaggravate way too often. Maybe Ramsey can serve as a temporary bandaid. I hope they don't try to bring Elliot back too soon.

Thieneman will be a perennial Pro Bowler, I was elated when he fell to us only to watch us take another long range project on a very raw OT.

Jenkins couldn't even start for the Browns. We saw this same movie last year, with the Steelers opening the season starting a Browns reject. It was a disaster. There is no reason to think this will be any better.

Just because the Steelers foolishly settled for this situation doesn't mean they were right, just as they were wrong last year. They had a stud safety fall to them in the draft. He was the plug-and-play option they needed, but Khan foolishly took another project at tackle instead.

Safety is the new WR2 for Khan.

Wishing it were true does not make it so. They need a free safety, which is what Thieneman does. He was a perfect fit for their needs, but they spent the pick on another project who is a much bigger risk.

Not completely on board w your thinking. Iheanachor showed promise in last preseason game.

He showed he was raw and not ready, at best. Meanwhile, Thieneman is starting from day one for the Bears.

DK Sports just did a live show and DK said he spoke to Elandon Roberts 5 minutes before the show, and he has no idea why he was cut or anything else. Sad, but Elandon will be on a new team come Monday.

There was chatter elsewhere about Roberts butting heads with McCarthy over the fight in practice last week.

It is evidence that he is exactly what I said he is, a plug-and-play stud at free safety, arguably the biggest position of need on the defense. Poor safety play plagued the defense all season. He could have fixed that problem, but the Steelers gambled on another project who isn't ready to start. It was a poor decision.

It could be a poor decision pending on how the two actually play. Gotta see if Max I is another B Jones first. I don’t disagree with your thought process however. Khan is making some questionable draft choices.

    Some possibilities:
    • SEA cut Rodney Thomas.
    • NOR released Terrell Burgess.
    • AZ released Isaiah Oliver

I am searching for OT to sign. Steelers need to bring somebody in. This is how poor I feel about the position.
We thought AR got rid of it quick last year, wait till he plays behind this OL.

This is Scribes thing, Steelers would win the SB every year if they only listened to him. Prepare yourselves, he’ll harp on this all year even when Max is playing at a high level and the secondary is playing well.

Of course you never hear about the players he was wrong about.

Well to be fair this was a huge decision. We desperately needed a safety. He was sitting there on the board and instead we took yet another project at tackle. Most would learn from past mistakes but it seems we keep reaching for tackles early and watching them perform way below expectations. I know hind sight is 20 20 but this seems to me to be a huge mistake. I hope it works out but I don't think it will. Maybe the new coaching staff can get him ready to play but I don't see him stepping in and making a difference. So let's hope I'm wrong. But how nice would it have been to get a safety ready to start right out of the gate?
