Drew Allar play so far to 8-25-26

I like what I have seen in Drew Allar in camp and preseason. The physical tools that made him a high-upside prospect the elite arm talent, size (6'5", 228), the ability to drive the ball downfield without air under it, layer throws, and work on the move are showing up. DB's have not be there to deflect many passes because they have velocity on the football. His “grade A” traits are exactly why Pittsburgh valued him as a third-round steal (and why Mike McCarthy has publicly said the organization felt they were getting first-round talent). A few points that track especially closely with the film and reports which the media hardly speaks about.

Processing and reads: The 3-second clock concern hasn’t materialized in the limited looks. He’s worked through progressions cleanly and located receivers well against the softer preseason looks. The Packers debut (10-of-13, 153 yards, 2 pass TDs + a rushing score) was the clearest example of quick decisions and timing.

Pocket presence/footwork: Clear improvement from college. Stepping up, sliding, and resetting under pressure have been positives. McCarthy specifically noted Allar’s ability to “auto-correct” his footwork on the fly, which is a big deal for a young QB in this system.

Ball security and decision-making: Zero interceptions across the first two preseason games is excellent. He’s not forcing it into tight windows unnecessarily, secures the ball as a runner, and the occasional overthrow or off-target throw hasn’t turned into turnovers. The short-game touch and check-downs still need polish. Those throw are easy to make.

Command: He looks comfortable in the huddle and with the play-calling. Pre-snap adjustments are rare in August


The second outing vs. the Jets was a tougher test—11-of-23 for 110 yards, no scores ( missed FG on one drive, time ran out in the red zone on the other. Three sacks. Some of that traces to protection issues (which. he received basically none ) and drops,( 7 ) but it also showed the areas that still need work: holding the ball a beat too long at times and refining accuracy under live rush. Preseason defenses aren’t dialing up the full menu of blitzes and disguises yet, so the real test of hot reads and full-field processing is still ahead. The supporting cast he’s seen so far has largely been the fringe roster guys. He has the type of ability to make the#1's shine.

Play-action and the McCarthy West Coast staples have looked natural when used, and his size/mobility combo should make him a solid fit there once the full offense is installed.The fact that he hasn’t thrown anyone under the bus or shown negative body language is a quiet but important leadership marker, especially for a multi-year college captain. Low career INT rates and the toughness to finish plays after contact also travel well. Allar getting extended looks with the ones against Buffalo in the preseason finale would be the perfect next data point. I for one can't wait.

He has exceeded my expectations of where he would be at this point. No doubt the Steelers are happy. No doubt he has QB guru coaching him up.

subtract the big wetjen play that the defender fell down. 75 yards off of a fluke play. he was 9-12 for 78 yards in the first game. the wetjen play inflated his game to look much better. he also played against 3rd and 4ths. i don't think he should be on the pedestal that you think at this point. sure he has looked ok so far but it's a small sample size.
