Maybe, but we are talking about Rd 3 not Rd 1.... a bit of grading on the curve

 

As a fan, I break third-round busts into two main categories. Looking at our past third-round picks (going back to 2020), here’s how I see it.

Category 1: The guys who simply lack the physical tools. These players rarely last long at the NFL level. They usually fail to show anything in camp or the preseason they just don’t play well and never stand out.Examples of these busts:

K. Green: A small, undersized, and too-weak center. The red flags were obvious to any scout who did their homework.

D. Leal: A player without a true position. Too small to be a 5-technique, not quick or fast enough to be an effective 3-technique.

K. Johnson: Not quick enough to be a true NFL running back and not strong enough to be a power back. I expect he’ll be cut in his second season.

On the other side, we’ve had solid third-round hits.

Category 2: These are the players who showed they could start and actually contribute to a football team:

Highsmith, P. Wilson, and Washington. Our third-round batting average has been pretty solid overall.One special case. I think R. Wilson is different. He was stuck playing for a bad staff that didn’t use him properly. Now he gets a fresh start with McCarthy’s staff, and I’m optimistic that changes things. Physically he has the goods. It the metal side of being a pro that some have questioned. This is the season in which he will be judged.

 

Every draft pick coming out of collage is a crap shoot whether being a very good player to a can't miss. Some just can't adjust to the NFL game. It happens.

Take a look at Caleb Johnson and Roman Wilsons college playing resumes. Not to shabby.

Johnson because of lack of special teams contribution I believe will be cut.

Wilson can't get the routes down properly and Rodgers will not stand for that. So I would not be surprised if they cut him or try to trade him. Unfortunately they are a bit thin in the receiver department so he might still have a spot.

 

Cowher couldn't decide if he was an OLB or DE from what I remember.

 

50% doesn’t sound like much but league wide there is a 40% chance of finding a consistent starter in the 3rd round
