A pass is generally not near you when the WR is in the wrong spot.

Wilson did not run perfect routes. That is true. On both plays he drifted upfield instead of staying flat against man coverage, which made the undercuts easier. But Howard is still the main problem here. He’s the one who has to put the ball where only his guy can get it (or at least where the defender has a much harder time undercutting it). On the second interception especially, the ball was behind Wilson. Leading him properly would have given Wilson a chance to run under it and would have taken the easy pick away from the Jets player. That’s quarterback responsibility. IE accuracy and placement to a moving target.

I disagree, the second interception I feel is even more Wilsons fault, the first interception Im less sure about. If he flattens here I believe he is where the defender ended up being. Probably thrown slightly behind him but can make that catch, at worst the defender breaks it up and it’s an incompletion.

Start Allar in the first half. Start Howard in the second.

I do agree on playing with backups to see what you have. That said, Germie Bernard, Daylen Everette and Gennings Dunker either play the full game or all the way into the midway point of the third quarter. All three need those reps.

Spears Jennings should play the whole game. Same goes for Gabriel Rubio.

The first pick Wilson was supposed to cut straight across the 9 yard line which would have made him wide open for the first down. Instead he drifted 6 yards deeper than he should have, running down to where the defender was.

Just watched it again, you’re absolutely right. I was thinking the DB just made a good play on the ball but Wilson gave him the angle to do so.

    Allar is ahead of schedule.

He’s leapfrogged Howard and will start vs. Buffalo. The 22 year old has earned this by outplaying him for 2 pre-season games.

Howard gets the second half… and if he plays poorly, he’s getting cut

Allar actually played well. His stats don't show it because of 7 drops.

He moved in a collapsing pocket well keeping eyes downfield delivering one. He showed pocket presence using legs when needed protecting the ball.

He actually did a lot better than people give him credit for. Also many of his WR were blanket covered because of their inability to get separation.

Yeah I've now studied this play more than I care to admit. Both ints were partly on Roman Wilson as well as timing issues on the route. He wasn't really open on the 2nd one didn't have separation.

Also good read and play by the safety on the "zombie". So part of this is taking two young players to school a bit for a rough lesson.

I'm afraid to see Iheanachor at RT. Afraid I'll be disappointed.

I would actually like to see some starters see some action to get acclimated too the hitting.

Like many things, it seems pretty clear that this is "both / and" not "either / or". They both screwed up on the play.

The DB ran the route better than Wilson. I think the lesson learned here by the QB's is just don't throw it to Wilson. Even if he's open just play it safe and throw the ball out of bounds.

Don't like not seeing the starting unit run any plays at all in the preseason. Would have liked to see Rogers with his new receivers for a least a couple of series. It's not like we usually jump out of the gate in the first half of week one.

Ok We will see how he does if he starts the next preseason game. I am not an Allar fan. It comes from watching him for four years at Penn State. Hope that the coaches can fix it but he folds under pressure. When the game is on the line he disappears. Hopefully he will be taught how to handle pressure and to step up when needed. I'm not confident that will happen

Recall at the end of the draft, I myself said there would be a path for Rubio to stake his claim. He would have to beat both Logan Lee and Esezi Otomewo. Logan Lee is out (possibly done as a Steeler) and Esezi is too inconsistent. He does have an experience advantage but Rubio has been performing above expectations.

Let's see if he has saved his best for last to stake his claim to the final 53.

Yep. It's a combination of things that happened. Wilson definitely needs to flatten that route as it is designed. Howard's throw also wasn't very good.

One thing we don't know is what the progression order was supposed to be on the play. Howard drew the safety to the right side when his eyes went that way immediately with his first read. Then Wilson was the second read he went to which was still to the right side, so the safety was in much better position to make a play on the ball.

It is possible that Howard went through the progressions in the order they are drawn up in the playbook. However, he may have picked a matchup he liked or to make a throw he was more comfortable with on that play.

The other possibility is that McCarthy and his staff had him only reading one side of the field to simplify the read. If Howard was simply following the designed progressions of the play, the safety should probably be looked off to the left before the throw.

Either way, the best option as a quarterback is if you plan on throwing right you look left first to influence the safety to start moving that way and prevent him from making a play on the ball when you throw to the right. This is something that all young quarterbacks need to work on and may have been an issue on that play as well.

We can't know precisely because we don't know the playbook or how they are being coached to execute the play.

and yet you praised him in game 1 playing against 3's 4's and 5's.... so which is it? he needs to play with the 1's or against the 3,4 and 5's?

Going in his favor: the alternative options for the sixth defensive lineman are weak. There’s very little film/tape on Rubio, so the evaluation was limited for the draft. Still, his instincts at DT look solid—he locates the ball quickly and can shed blockers. He’s a big body with a good motor for his size and projects as a two-down run defender.

You guys are worrying too much about this Allar/Howard situation, its the 3rd and 4th string QB's, its not life or death.

Im not saying Wilson wasn't at any fault, what im saying is everyone that says it wasn't Howards fault on the 1st pick is telling me he didn't see the route that Wilson ran, and He didn't see the DB flying that way even before he let the ball go???
