There’s too many ways to interpret it for me to take that leap. You can say the WR’s were bad, you can say he played poorly against good teams, you can say he wasn’t good enough to elevate the players around him… they’re all true to an extent. There’s plenty of time for him to improve, but it is certainly concerning that he played poorly against the best teams (pretty much without exception).

I have heard people who cover football talk about how bad that Penn State offense was.

Arch should not be on our radar. We already have our QB room for the forseeable future. After Rodgers retires its Mason, Howard, Allar. May the best qb win.

This sets us up nicely long term. Can concentrate on drafting other positions besides QB.

I don't know if that is a bad thing. If he played well against top competition, he would be gone before our first pick. Now, BECAUSE of that lack of big game success we have a uber talented guy who has fixable flaws in his mechanics due to bad coaching AND had bad wideouts.

If he was fundamentally sound yet choked in big games THAT would be another matter. As I said earlier, is it really that he chokes or are his flawed fundamentals preventing success against elite teams. Perhaps it was just that Allar and Penn State can beat bad teams because he could get away with poor form in those games. His fundamental flaws just get exposed against top teams. That gets fixed, it is a whole new deal.

We have a QB guru as head coach, breaking him down to basics. He essentially is saying, I know how to teach a QB fundamentals and if he is teachable, we got a steal".

There are no guarantees but if those fundamentals are indeed fixed, it would be foolish to assume a fundamentally sound Allar would have the same limitations in big games as he had in college.

There is a good chance that neither Allar or Howard take an NFL snap this year and Rudolph is only a middling career backup. That would be a terrible QB room next year with a 32 year old QB with 9 career wins and 2 guys who have never played a down of football in the NFL. Bringing back Rodgers this year just kicked the can down the road farther about finding out what we have in Howard and Allar. Don't be surprised next season that the Steelers do the same one year rental of a veteran starter whose best years are behind him.

Agree to disagree. Thats a "glass is half empty" way of looking at it. With new coaches, HC and OC, and overall better qb coaching Mason could well be our starter next year and have a career year. Not saying it will definitely happen but w new offense and strong players around him...

I am satisfied with Howard and Allar as our young project QBs. No need to bring in a veteran next year or spend a high draft pick on a qb next year. Tonight should be interesting.

I sure hope that Howard and or Allar are the answer but it's going to be hard to find out with 2 veterans ahead of them on the roster. The best thing that could happen is that one or both of them are so amazing this pre-season that Mason is traded and that moves them both up the depth chart.

Well, the Steelers might feel differently. A ways to go yet, but tonight's game didn't seem to bolster the case for those young QBs.

A bad game is probably the best thing for these guys, keeps them grounded, focused, and hungry to improve. That's why they are " young project QBs"

They need playing experience. Even if they play poorly that is still valuable experience. But I didn't think Allar really had a chance tonight his O line and 4th team receivers were awful.

I have to admit that last week had me thinking "ok maybe this kid just had idiots coaching him at Penn St." But he's still got so much to work on. I don't know that it makes sense to allow him to win that QB2 role, even if the other two can't beat him out. I'd rather see him redshirted. Let him work the mechanics and just spend a full season soaking in the offense and working on those mechanics.

If MM is a QB guru, why did his QBs get better after he left his last two teams?

    I'm not convinced.

He won a Super Bowl with Rodgers, he never made it back to the Super Bowl after MM left.

You need time for a QB to develop. What did Rogers have 3 years behind Farve. He was a first round talent. How about Love behind Rogers? How many years did he have.

Yet people want to throw Will Howard and Drew Allar to the wolves to get devoured whom both are essentially rookies.

As I thought our WR's let Allar down last night. Count the drops.

    • Drop 1: seven yards downfield by Joaquin Davis
    • Drop 2: 15 yards downfield by Jakobie Keeney-James
    • Drop 3: eight yards downfield by Lake McRee
    • Drop 4: six yards downfield by Jakobie Keeney-James
    • Drop 5: 17 yards downfield by Jaheim Bell
    • Drop 6: 17 yards downfield by Lance Mason
Adding up the drops and how far downfield they took place, Allar’s stat line would have been 17-of-23 for 180 yards. And just look at the names of who he was throwing to. How about starting him in the preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills and see what he looks like throwing to Germie Bernard and Roman Wilson instead of guys who will be selling nipple rings at Hot Topic in two weeks.

The drop by McRee was going to be a long gainer. Allar hit him perfectly in stride on the slant and he had a lot of open field in front of him.

Word. Allar had 4 15+ yard plays that were dropped last night. As such the stats do not tell his story. The OL did not help either.
