My thoughts on preseason wk 1

You answered the most important question in why you keep a backup in you statement, and why you don't.

 

Porter Jr. extension wouldn't kick in until next year.

 

I already started happy hour, but we could have the best team offense since Ken Whisenhunt was OC.

 

I liked what I saw from Bernard and Wetjen. Our WR room is all of a sudden taking shape.

As the game progressed, I liked how Tonyan was contributing to the passing game. I didn’t pay too close attention, but wonder how he is as an in-line blocker.

QB play was good, understanding it is preseason and most QBs will look good against vanilla defenses.

I still don’t love Rudolph. He didn’t seem to navigate the pocket too well, got a couple of sacks. If the play unfolds quickly and on time and ball is out, Rudolph is alright, but if it is a longer developing play or things break down, Rudolph seems to struggle.

 

It’s preseason but the trolls were minimal

The bitching about the refs was less than usual

 

Stats that matter.

 

Mason actually played the first two series where there were still a few starters on the packers D. And Given our O line performance he was fine.

 

I would've liked to see Roman get more involved in the passing game with Pittman and Metcalf being out.

 

Rudolph is a classic pocket passer. So is Rodgers at this point. So the offense is built for them. Howard and Allar are scramblers, especially Howard. We haven't see either one throw out of muddy pockets. Test is yet to come.

That makes sense. Everyone should have a near perfect idea of what to expect from Rudolph since he has been around for a while. Knock the cobwebs off, kick the tires and put him back on the bench so that you can see what the other 2 guys have to offer.

Rudolph's poor pocket presence was on display, but the line's poor play did not help.

 

Good pocket passers can move within the pocket. They can slide away from pressure. They can feel the rush. Rudolph can't do any of that.

 

That first sack was not a positive sign. Still not certain Fautanu can handle the blind side.

 

I can’t watch the Reindeer, he has to go, he a bum.

 

I remember kenny picket looked pretty good in preseason too.

 

Part of the reason we have an entirely new staff is because we've been kept around .500.
Time to shake it up

 

Loved what I saw in the 1st preseason game.

The Coaching staff: Plays across the middle, Play designs, Play calling, Timely blitzes, just a breath of fresh air to watch.

The Players: QB's play , Play calling and execution except Mason a little slow in getting rid of ball in the 1st series. Allar was surprising and you could see his talent and arm strength. Like what I saw from the receivers and tight ends. Penalties are a problem but that can be fixed.

Cautiously Optimistic but loved what I saw.

 

Ben made this point on his podcast - I think most people are taking all of the excitement about the QB competition with the pinch of salt that one preseason game requires.

 

"Sure, it was just the preseason against a defense that didn’t do much to disguise its pre-snap looks, and Allar acknowledged he’ll probably get a minus grade for one piece of footwork on a “crazy reverse on the center exchange.” Still, it was a promising debut that highlighted some of Allar’s upside. Even on a throwaway near the end zone, he showed solid decision making.

“I kind of screwed up in the first part of the read,” Allar said. “But you don’t make a bad play worse is something that we kind of always talk about.”

 

Kenny Pickett's preseason and Drew Allars Preseason are entirely different for multiple reasons. The biggest of which is that Kenny Pickett went into the 2023 Season as the starter. Drew is not going into the 2026 Season as the starter.


By virtue of that one single difference, people are conflating two different circumstances entirely.
