Drew Allar was in complete control.

One bad pass. Shook it off. I was a doubter but completely impressed

 

He is a McCarthy pick and has that going for him. He also involved receivers in the game unlike Howard who was mostly targeting the TE. I think McCarthy prefers that also. Allar showed athleticism and arm too. Both Allar and Howard have past injury concerns.
At this point I would think Allar would be favored over Howard for the roster spot.
As far as Mason goes, it seems to me that his roster spot will depend on whether McCarthy keeps 2 or 3 QBs on the roster. He showed in-game grit tonight.

I wish they went with Mason this year as the starter instead of Rodgers, but now that Rodgers is in I would think they keep Mason as the backup since the goal is to win games and compete for the Superbowl this season. And groom Allar the Green Bay style.

 

Allar is going to be on the team. That was a lock before camp even started.

 

Allar looked 10 times better than what the Will Howard fans were reporting.

Hope he gets some 1st team reps in preseason. (Or at least as close as he can get to running with some 1s)

 

They all looked good. I was pleased with Allar.

 

I mean let's back that wagon up a bit. Allar was playing against GB backups. Nice that he didn't s__t the bed. But he also wasn't being pressured like a starting NFL defense will do. Most of the receivers were college open on plays. That said, he has an NFL arm in contrast to Howard (who reminded me of Pickett, i.e. ok on intermediate throws but needs his whole body on deep throws). If things continue I expect the pecking order will change sooner rather than later.

Correct. It’s always been Howard vs Mason and last night didn’t make it an easier on them as I thought both played well. I still don’t think we can keep 4 QBs though.

 

Admit I was excited but not jumping to conclusions after 1 meaningless game. Howards march down the field was nice but the receivers were wide open. Would not be like that in a real game. Allar did a great job and showed he has the tools but played against guys who will probably end up on the practice squad.

If the Steelers next 2 pre-season games go like this one did Steelers have a tough decision to make. I can't see them carrying 4 QB's.

 

That’s the same as everyone playing in preseason. It’s not real football but better to look good than bad regardless.

 

I was really impressed with his confidence and poise. That vibe he had when he entered the game. Did you feel it too? And the play itself… wow. He looked like a starter, and he’s only a 22-year-old rookie. See, I told you his Penn State coaching and wide receivers were poor by Big Ten standards. Drew has matured a lot since then. Now he’s got good coaching and real wide-receiver talent.

This is only the preseason, so I’m framing it that way, but Allar looked as good as any Steelers rookie QB making his preseason debut. Better than even Ben’s first preseason outing. Think about what I am saying. Of course I want to see more games before I fully judge, but Allar killed it, and he did it with the third-string offense. Like I said before, I can’t wait to see that big arm operating with the first-string guys and putting them in position to make plays. Nothing was wrong with his footwork, the three-second clock, or his base reads. Howard showed a decent mid-game for the passing game, and Rudolph was solid to start.

Still early but I can't see them releasing the young guys. Howard played great with confidence, made good reads, and was accurate. When you don't have a franchise QB, you don't let the young one's showing promise leave.

With that said, do you get rid of the one that is battle tested that also played well?

Tough decisions. Still more time to evaluate.

Kenny Pickett looked like a stud in preseason.

 

Howard played against 2nd stringers. Allar 3rd and 4th stringers. All 3 QBs looked good. Refreshing to have a HC who has a clue about offense.

Never forget... it's preseason. Never forget...Pickett, 3 years ago in preseason and the opener vs 49ers. Never forget.

 

I like the kid's release and how he throws on the move.

All three QB's looked good, Rudolph was steady and did nothing to diminish his trade value. Showcase him, trade him, and hope for the best from Howard and Allar but we have to see what they have and if we keep Rudolph, we may never see what we have.

The O-line was a mess, I don't think I saw many holes open in the middle for the running backs, pass protection was spotty.

The penalties were insane, granted it was the first time they were actually hitting someone, but the personal fouls were unacceptable.

The D created confusing pressures and coverage which was nice to see.

Special teams has a lot of work to do, I think there was a penalty on 90% of the returns.

I think the focus during these games should be did player x show a firm grasp of the fundamentals that MM is trying to install and can they demonstrate that grasp. I thought all three QB's showed they had the basics down and limited mistakes. Allar showed he could throw a slant just as well as a deep shot. The long catch and run by Wetjen showed he could capitalize on a mistake by the Packers.

 

Man the what could've been that year with Riemersma. Not to mention Spielmen on the color commentary. Good times good times

 

Memories of KFP come to mind. KFP looked good in preseason and was moving the ball up and down the field with ease. I am going to manage my expectations this time and not fall prey to predicting any kind of future with respect to Allar. Optimistic yes but not silly

 

Yep, I just loved the creativity at the goal line!

I've read a couple articles this morning grading Rudolph with a C or C+ and that is pure BS, but then 99% of our media is pure BS. He did a great job, the other guys just had better opportunities and took advantage of them.

 

Both kids looked good. Great to see. Without better game film it's tough to tell but Mason appeared to hold the ball too long a couple times. That's been a problem. He still played pretty well though. If they can get a 5th or so for him, he made get moved unless Mike actually keeps all 4.

 

Tell me more? I am aware that each had an injury (both last year)...but do they have a history of getting injured repeatedly? I don't watch enough college ball to know.

This was my immediate thought too. I think Howard can be better than Pickett, but he just doesn't have the arm talent of Allar.

Taking everything into account, I still think Allar popped off the screen with his throws, poise and even decision making. At 22 and getting a year with Rodgers, hard not to be excited. Would love not to have to chase a QB next draft.

 

Allar needs to play before Howard against the Jets. 3 TD's is quite eye opening and showed poise. A+ effort.
