26 Draft

My wife and I traveled to Pittsburgh for the first 2 days of the draft....Pittsburgh did not disappoint. Weather was perfect, people were awesome, food was fantastic and the city was absolutely on point! We are making plans to attend a game in Pittsburgh sooner, rather than later. Most likely next season, as I am going to be out of vacation for this year. I have told everyone that asks...I would 100% move to the Pittsburgh area, if I could. I love the place! To everyone on here that lives in the greater Pittsburgh area, you have much to be proud of. The city absolutely killed it!

 

As a Canadian who has longed to go to the Steel City for a major event, I agree. Pittsburgh was incredible all around overall. Food, people, atmosphere, scenery (namely how lush and green many of the hills where) to even the weather, I enjoyed myself very much.


Definitely will be going back again for certain.

 

They call us the "Paris of Appalachia" for a reason. Glad you enjoyed it here in Western Pa.

 

We wished we could have stayed longer, as there was so much more that we wanted to see, but the point of our trip was the draft, so we concentrated on that

Wanted to do a lot more today myself but I spent all day prepping to head back.

 

I live locally and went down the first night of the draft. It was electric. PGH Metro area knocked this one out of the park it was this well run. Shattered NFL draft attendance record. Not bad for
a metro area of 2.4 million people.

 

I've been a few times for games but never in nice weather. Mid October was the earliest I've been. Want to come in September one year and take in a ball game as well. I've seen a couple of Pens games but never the Pirates. More for the stadium than the team.

 

the best thing is the view when you come out of the tunnel and see the city. a view like no other.

 

I'm not a huge baseball fan, but I have taken in a game there, it is a beautiful stadium

 

I live north of the city a ways

If I pick up visitors at the airport who have never been to Pittsburgh I will go out of the way on the way home to take them through the tunnel and then go north

Particularly at night

 

What was the traffic like? Pittsburgh traffic can be pretty dicey at the best of times. Did hosting an event make the traffic noticeably worse?

 

I want to go. Last time we were there we stayed across the river, I think at the Wyndham with a room facing the stadiums. What a gorgeous view.

 

My favorite view of PGH is on top of MT. Washington, for out of towners coming to PGH to visit
catch a Steeler/Pirate/Pens game do yourself a favor take the trolley up and take in a spectacular view.

To me, that is coming home. I remember Oval Jaynes when he was the AD at Pitt. He said Pittsburgh was the only city he had been to that had a front door. Funny it took a transplant for me to hear someone put it that way.

 

We went in early 2006 for a couple days between the championship games and the super bowl and although I grew up an hour north of Pittsburgh and had over the years often worked in Pittsburgh, I had never gone to the city just for fun.

Living south of Cleveland, I was genuinely amazed at the difference in the two cities. In Cleveland you fear for your life if you use public transportation, in Pittsburgh the bus drivers greeted us every time we hopped on a bus. The people were awesome, and I'm sure the attitude was extra hyped since the Steelers were headed to the SB, but everyone was so cool.

My consulting practice had me in all the major cities in North America, and aside from the driving, Pittsburgh was by far the most fun.

A couple of my friends who are Browns fans were trash talking Pittsburgh and they said every time they go to a game there is a fight. I said "yeah cause you're there!" Last year at the last regular season game, I was in line for beer and a Ravens fan was in front of me, we started chatting and he offered to buy my beer and said thanks but I am buying three, He said he would be happy to buy them because coming to Pittsburgh for a game is always a treat, the fans are knowledgeable, realistic, and great to hang out with. He said "going to a game in Cleveland is always a ****-show, it's like going to an inbred convention."

 

Pittsburgh traffic is not dicey. We are very fortunate as a metro area compared to most cities. Even I. The worst of times from a traffic standpoint we pale in comparison to most cities? Have you ever driven In NYC, DC, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, LA, Houston heck even metros like Raleigh or Nashville are worse than Pittsburgh. For middle sized city we are very fortunate when it comes to traffic. We are not a dense city when it comes to housing or traffic. We are more sprawling than people realize.

 

I mentioned in my post that driving in the burgh is tough. I guess I could clarify, highway traffic flow is fine, but if you need street help, prior to GPS, you were screwed. I got a kick out of it when I would need street directions and a local would say, "take this street for 2 miles and turn left on xxxxx and take that for a mile." What didn't come out in those directions was taking "this street" for two miles involved 6 hard lefts and 5 hard rights, all at intersections.

Most large city's streets are laid out in a grid, Pittsburgh's are laid out like a bowl of spaghetti dropped on the floor.

 

I agree with that. Actual downtown driving can be e dicey because the grid is old with it being an older city and all the one ways and bridges and ramps. But with GPS it has made it so much easier. The void between downtown and Oakland isn’t great either. I always thought the city could have done a better job to develop and connect Oakland to downtown. At the very least they should have a high speed transit system between the two and the airport. It from a metro perspective we are spoiled. The traffic is fairly limited with the exception of the parkway out to Monroeville. I know from Cranberry to downtown it’s a breeze. I have literally gotten home from a Steeler game in under a half hour going back to cranberry. Now that includes leaving the game with a couple minutes left to beat the traffic and parking in the gold lot 1.

 

I used to live in the Pittsburgh area. We'll agree to disagree on what constitutes dicey traffic.

 

I love when people voice their opinion without anything to back it up. It’s all relative anyway. Where do you live now Alaska? It all depends on what city your com-airing it too.
