NFL App Streaming

For this entire season, we have experienced horrible streaming experiences on the NFL App. Frequent freezes that sometimes come back where it left off and sometimes come back 30 second (ish) further into the game. It does this from 2 phones and a pad. We have Starlink, and we have also run thru the cell towers with no noticeable difference between the two, even when we are away from home (meaning different cell towers). It seems worse when teams with very large fan bases play (Steelers, Cowboys, Eagles, 49ers....etc). That makes me think that the issue must lie with the NFL's streaming capacity. We don't have any problem when we stream Thursday night on Amazon.

When you do a web search, you get no results for it.....yet we know other people who have the same issues which makes me wonder if the NFL is paying to have search results suppressed (yes, that is a thing). Anyone else seeing similar issues? Or have any suggestions on a fix?

 

I see a lot of complaints online. If you are local can't you get a native stream?

 

We are full time rv'ers .... Used to watch it on direct TV, but then they lost the contract. So we are limited on TV channels. The problem is not so much what we can stream, it is that when we stream on the NFL, the feed is horrible. Constant freezes. We can watch the replays and it will still freeze a little bit, but it is a huge improvement which makes me even more sure that the problem is with their bandwidth on a live stream.

On a live game, we probably see a freeze 40+ times during the game. On a replay, it is less than 10..... Maybe less than 5........ Those are just guesstimates as I don't actually count. But during a live stream, we see a freeze every 2 or 3 minutes and sometimes several times in a minute.

 

I have found Sunday Ticket to be a good experience, I am guessing it is more costly though. Friends use the Android boxes successfully.

 

I had to stream the game today from a website (they have every game) I experienced 2 freezes during the whole game. I stream it on my phone and then AirPlay it to my tv.

 

I hear Harbaugh's video guys are looking for work. Maybe thesteelersfans can sponsor them to stream the games in stadium.

 

What is your internet speed? Being in a rv , im not sure if you have high speed internet. Also, what website are you using to watch game?

 

I am using the NFL app to stream. I have starlink. Bad download speeds are in the 30 to 60 range. Good are 150+.

 

You say bad is in the 30-60 range. I’m new to this. Is 30-60 actually bad. I just want it to watch TV.

 

30 to 60 is plenty to stream. And when I say 'bad', that is just bad in comparison to what it is possible to get. At 30 to 60, the only real issues will come if you have a bunch of devices connected as they will all be taking a bit of that speed for their use and that makes each device a bit slower, or if you download big files it will take longer.

Here are the download speeds to stream at various qualities from a web search:

• Standard Definition (480p): 3 Mbps

• High Definition (720p): 3 to 4 Mbps

• Full HD (1080p): 5 to 8 Mbps

• 4K Ultra HD: 15 to 25 Mbps [1, 2, 3]

How do you like you football?!

A big 4K (or better) 75"+ set turns watching football into something closer to being in the stands or better, depending on the seat. You only miss the roar of the crowd. We’re already seeing multi-view options and free-viewpoint systems. China has been demoing full 360° control where you can drag, zoom, and orbit around the action. Skeletal tracking is also arriving, letting broadcasts lock onto individual players.In a few years you’ll probably be able to set presets: “Always keep the ball-carrier centered and give me a low-angle trailing shot,” or “Lock on the free safety and show me his view of the play developing.” In years they will be putting in tiny cameras into football helmets, allowing the viewer to see what the player is.

8K and even 16K exist right now but cost a lot to broadcast. In 8k or 16K your eyes can process more detail than what you typically see in real life! Don't ask me how. But the jump from 4K (which is already excellent) to 16K doesn’t offer much extra perceptible detail for human viewing. The real leap was from 1080p to 4K. That one is significant.
