Somehow the same people that say regular season doesn't matter thinks playoff wins are more important than SB appearances, and SB wins. LoL:shrug:

Since Steelers have to win at least 2 playoff games in order to make the Super Bowl... it's slightly important.

I was at that game. Almost all of Fred Taylor's yards were on misdirection runs. He would start left and the defense would over pursue and he would make a sharp cutback to the right and find open field.

Can't make the playoffs unless you win anywhere from 9-11 games in the regular season, depending on how rest of conference performs.:rolleyes:

Don't you know that they sprinkle pixie dust on all the players as they walk by the old Lombardi trophies?

Putting on the uniform of the team we like best should just make them better...

Notice how you changed the subject here?

Just like the previous personal insults, this is a good sign that the facts didn't support your previous argument.

Still waiting for who you think the elite talent on the team was last year (or even the last few seasons)?

Or how we had superior talent in the playoff games against at minimum KC (old-man Ben vs. Mahomes), BUF (Mason vs. Allen), or BAL (old-man Wilson vs. Lamar).

    Don't you get it.

When you point out the regular season success of one coach, it's evidence that coach was good.

When you point of the regular season success of another coach, it's evidence that coach is bad.

The truth is that Cowher and Tomlin were both above average NFL coaches who had significant success over a long period of time.

    They are comparable coaches.

I think there are likely reasonable arguments why someone would prefer either one.

Arguing that one was much better than the other just shows that a person has significant bias for or against one of them.

Because they're basically the same coach.

Seriously, are you reading the same post that I am? And how did I personally insult you?

Choose your responses by spinning a wheel?

    The 80s say hello...

Those results don't mean that Noll was a bad coach by the way.

Damn, I had managed to get the '80s out of my mind for a while.

    So true!

But even then, you always had hope near the end of a game.

So you think this response was engaging with the argument and not "ad hominem"?

What disgusting reasons do you think I have for pointing out that the Bs only played 4 games together?

And you think I'm spinning a wheel when responding?

With Ben this was true too.

Even in just horrible games like Jax and CLE in the playoffs.

He did a lot to dig the hole.

Then did almost enough to dig us out of it.

Both those statements are your opinion and strongly disagree with the second one.

Yep. We're all sharing my opinion on a message board.

But I think the onus would be on someone showing that the 2nd statement (which is just the "null hypothesis" here) is objectively false. Rather than the other way around. And I don't think it's easy (or not possible really) to probe that Cowher was significantly better than Tomlin (or vice versa). I don't know who I'd choose between the two when you consider the conditions they were in and how the league evolved over time.

Aside: Just like I think we can really objectively compare teams / coaches from pre UFA/cap to post. I think Noll is obviously the best coach the team has had. But that's also just opinion. I don't think it's really possible to compare them objectively since they were playing under completely different constraints. But winning 4 SBs makes me pretty confident Noll was the best of three very good coaches.

And FWIW, to say that Cowher was significantly better than Tomlin I think this shows a pretty strong bias against Tomlin. Just like anyone who says that Tomlin was significantly better than Cowher would be showing a pretty strong bias for Tomlin / against Cowher. I probably liked Cowher more. Maybe because I think the thing shoving the photo in the refs pocket was pretty bad ass. Better than when Tomlin tried to force the Rats returner back inside.

There's really no objective way (i.e., not just personal opinion) to say that one is much better than the other. So I honestly don't know who I'd choose between the two.

Again, I think it's fine to have a preference for one over the other. But that's different than saying that one is much better than the other.
    1. Tomlin was slightly better in the regular season (but basically the same).
    2. Tomlin was better at getting to the playoffs (13 berths in 19 years vs 10/15).
    3. Cowher won more playoff games when he got to the playoffs (though no one diminishes his early wins based on the team he inherited).
    4. Cowher had more balanced teams because he didn't have to pay the huge cap% to the QB that Ben (deservedly) got as he got deeper into his career
For points 2 and 3, I think part of this in both counts was the addition of the 7th seed. I don't remember every team Cowher took to the playoffs. But I don't think any of them were as bad as the teams we took to the playoffs in 20, 23, and 24.

I think both Tomlin and Cowher owe their SB wins to Ben. Without Ben, Cowher and Tomlin are both just different versions of Marty IMO.

This isn't a knock on either of them. The QB almost always makes the coach.

It's funny...I think if they switched places they'd have done pretty much the same as the other did. They both played the same low-risk trust the D brand of football. I think because they were both molded into HCs in the same system. I think that brand of football just worked better in Cowher's career (especially early) because defenders were allowed to defend more.

Again...very similar resumes. Tomlin was more consistent. Cowher won more playoff games. Not a ton to differentiate them.
