Aaron Rodgers Emerges As Potential Tony Romo Replacement After CBS Places Cowboys Legend on Indefinite Leave

Remember when Tom Brady signed a historic $375 million deal with FOX, only to delay his broadcasting debut until the fall of 2024? Aaron Rodgers now appears to be standing at a similar crossroads. As the twilight of his NFL career draws closer, the veteran quarterback could be preparing to trade the gridiron for the broadcast booth, following a path Brady helped pave.

Here’s how it could happen: CBS has placed former Cowboys player Tony Romo on indefinite leave following his DUI arrest in Milwaukee on July 23, creating a major void in its lead NFL booth. With Romo sidelined, reports suggest J.J Watt will replace Romo and star alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson. But CBS would need someone long-term. That’s where Rodgers comes in.

As per Awful Announcing’s Brandon Contes: “If CBS wants to chase Tom Brady-like stardom, the next big thing might have to be Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers has made it clear this will be his final year in the NFL.”

That said, Rodgers wasn’t exactly elated about doing TV, as per his confession some time back.

“We’re not going to live a public life,” he said earlier this year, while also sharing that his wife likes to stay away from the public eye.

But let us not forget that he mentioned how he’d like to replace Alex Trebek on Jeopardy! So, one could assume that if Rodgers and CBS work out an agreement, fans might see the veteran call games and share his valuable insights. After all, Romo was never CBS’s Brady equivalent, and J.J. Watt, who is currently working alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson, isn’t positioned as his permanent replacement.

Rodgers, who joined the Steelers and played the 2025 season in Pittsburgh, has said 2026 will be his final season.

“This is it,” he mentioned last week and also mentioned that there was a zero chance of him changing his mind.

Rodgers previously lobbied for a full‑time hosting job on ‘Jeopardy!‘ in 2021 after Alex Trebek’s passing. “Hosting the show has always been a dream of mine. It’s like my second dream job,” he told Sports Illustrated’s Dan Gartland.

But Rodgers’ polarizing media appearances raise concerns. Awful Announcing’s Ben Axelrod noted his January 2024 comments on The Pat McAfee Show linking Jimmy Kimmel to Jeffrey Epstein drew legal threats, raising questions about his ability to maintain decorum on network TV. And it doesn’t end here.

A 2025 report by Front Office Sport suggested that Rodgers might not draw the same kind of media intrigue that Brady had.

“Their main concern, under condition of anonymity, is that Rodgers comes off as a pompous know-it-all who would turn off viewers,” the article read. “His dalliance with COVID-19 conspiracy theories and public feuds with critics like Jimmy Kimmel on The Pat McAfee Show also concern some. With that in mind, the prospect of hiring Rodgers does not thrill executives.”

The report suggested that the quarterback, over the years, rubbed many media members the wrong way and that networks might shy away from giving him a job. For instance, Ryan Clark, who was recently fired by ESPN, once called the veteran player “arrogant” and “tone-deaf” for criticizing sports talk shows.

Even reporter Tyler Dunne, who spent years covering Aaron Rodgers during his Green Bay tenure, had offered little praise for the quarterback. Rodgers has long carried a reputation for being deeply sensitive to criticism and for holding grudges long after others have moved on.

Still, calling Sunday NFL games focuses strictly on football. Live coverage leaves little room for tangents, and Rodgers’ preparation and elite IQ could shine in that setting.

So, while CBS has not confirmed any interest, Rodgers has emerged in speculation as a potential long‑term replacement for Romo once he retires.

Rodgers is an odd duck.

I kind of assume that he'll go the Noll route when he's done and basically never be heard from again.

But he also did the auditions to be the host of Jeopardy, so who knows.

I think he's less of an attention whore than Brady. So I can't see him doing this. I can kind of get it from guys who didn't make quite as much money (e.g., Romo).

But if he has a 300 millions offer by cbs,similar for Brady with FOX,he could change his mind!

That's messed up. I like Romo as an announcer and CBS is being too harsh, IMO. How many Range Rovers has Tiger Woods totalled in the past 20 years? He still gets to play for PGA.

 

I don't know. Every single offseason for as long as I can remember, Rodgers has made a point of creating a spectacle around himself. I think everything he says or does is to get a reaction out of somebody.

I'm not so sure he just rides off somewhere and we never hear from him again. He seems to love being the center of attention.

 

I mean, for a guy that supposedly values his privacy he was a regular on McAfee's show. I'm not buying that he is just gonna disappear (unless Brittani says otherwise )

 

Big difference between Rodgers and Brady, as Brady has his TB12 brand to support. Brady has to do all this, as how else is he going convince someone to buy his $200.00 Cook-Book or his new an improved $12.00 Coconut water???

 

Being an NFL Analyst doesn't appear to be worth it anymore anyways as it stands. Digital age and Social Media are far more profitable for many of these players anyhow. The Arena has the likes of Aqib Talib and others.


As for Rodgers specifically?! Agree with @Blast Furnace. Rodgers has likely had enough of dealing with the media almost as much as he has had it dealing with the Press Conferences.


That level of nagging gets aggravating; doubly so after a generation of playing. No amount of money will ever buy a second of everlasting peace.
