Roman Wilson continued his impressive summer work. He’s getting open and beating defenders not only from the slot on 5- to 7-yard routes, but also down the field. He combines excellent short-area quickness with very good speed. A new feature of his game is his ability to navigate zone coverages well. He’s a tough cover. If he keeps this up, McCarthy can and will expand his role.

Drew Allar is flashing some big-time ability. While he’s a rookie who will make mistakes, he makes the offense potent with his big arm and velocity. His deep ball to Hurelman was impressive. He seems like the type who will push the ball downfield rather than settle for the safe throw a stark contrast to Rudolph and Howard. I can’t wait to see him get some work with the starters, as our top receivers are exactly the kind of players who can take advantage of his downfield mentality and arm talent. For now, though, the highlights are mostly confined to third-string players. In camp I look for the newer players to flash talent. With the no-tackling rule, I don’t expect the linebackers to stand out much.

50% is the expected win rate for any game since there's 2 teams. So this is probably the mean result if we took the win% average weighted by games.

But my guess is that it's also "above average" meaning that it's above the median (if we average by coach and don't weight by number of games). Since bad coaches can cause their teams to lose. And there are more bad coaches that get drummed out of the league than good coaches who stay in the league. So if we average over all the coaches that existed in the NFL since Tomlin was hired, I'd guess that the median and the mode for win% in close games is probably somewhere in the early to mid 40%s. Just a guess.

Expectation will actually be slightly lower than 50% since there are some small number of ties (just like there are green spaces in Roulette). So that might skew the win rate low by a percentage point or two as well.

The bottom line is the bolded part above. Under Tomlin they won close games at a very high rate (as shown above). There's a HS math test question in here too, but I'm too lazy to solve it: If they won 50% of close games where they allowed 20+ points and ~64% of close games total (I guess I'm counting the 2 ties as losses here), what percentage of close games did they allow more than 20 pts?

My guess without checking is that Tomlin also played in more close games than probably any coach over the duration of his career. But that might just be me feeling like every frickin game ends with the other team throwing for the endzone and they win if they catch it and lose if they don't. And his apparent love affair with "rock fights".

Varying opinions are fine. That's what message boards are all about.

It's when people try to stop others from posting their opinions and controlling what everyone says. Some try to bully people into not posting their thoughts if they don't agree with them.

The last message board that I was a part of collapsed because of it. You couldn't just have normal debate. Far too many picked a side on a subject and it descended into personal attacks and trying to shut others down every single time they posted anything. It was no longer enjoyable to spend time there and the place imploded and shut down.

The debates should never get personal. We all get charged up about what we believe but, in the end, this is supposed to be fun and the debates should remain civil.

See, for me I think it’s good thing because now the focus is on technique and they will wrap the ball carrier up. This team was abysmal at tackling and by MM enforcing the policy of not wanting anyone to go to the ground, you now have to wrap them up. I’m assuming thats how it is anyway, Im not there so I dont know what it looks like.

It also seems that every year the Steelers finish the season like they are out of gas, maybe all that physicality wears them out by seasons end. I mean I dont know how much hitting was being done anyway with the CBS rules and the limited padded practices they have now but from listening to the beat writers, it was definitely a lot of it during camp.

I wonder if they will keep backs on backers, that's where Warren made a name for himself when he was a rookie IIRC.

You should wait to see the results of everything McCarthy is doing before you mock him and trash him.
