This is exactly why it pays for players to wait as long as they can.

I don't know if Porter will get paid more or less than Gonzalez. But it sounds like Gonzalez is going to push the market forward by a fair amount. So Porter will get paid more after the Gonzalez contract than he would have if he took a deal based on the contracts that were on top of the CB leaderboard at the beginning of the offseason.

It's almost always best for good to very good players to wait as long as they can to either (1) reset the market themselves or (2) benefit from another good to very good player resetting the market.

It's almost always better for teams to sign guys early (like we did with Fitz). But the player also has to choose to sign early. I was pretty surprised when Minkah mad that decision. I figured that he would wait (at least close to) as long as possible like Watt has.

Maybe the only player this doesn't work for is Cam. Because the team just knows that Cam will do anything he can to help the team. He doesn't have it in him to put himself before the team (even in negotiations).

Christian Gonzalez was there for the taking and we took Broderick Jones.

I say trade him. Get a 1st round pick and then some if possible.

And that's when teams would be wise to use the tag. Then they know exactly what they will be paying while they work out an extension and the team gets another season for a somewhat reasonable price.

Their window is now, with Maye on his rookie deal. In a few years... tough choices.

I agree. The tag is a big part of the team's leverage. That's true in the current negotiation too (because it sets the ceiling for the first two new years).

But I also think it's worth remembering that we can't tag Porter this year. It has to happen next year.

At that point, he'll already get the market reset that happens this offseason. But the player has to make the bet that they aren't going to get hurt between now and then. I'm guessing this is a hard bet to make for most guys coming off a rookie contract.

But if it gets to a tag next year, if a player was interested in maximizing their income (the only reason they get to the tag year IMO), they'd also try to delay the long term contract negotiation next offseason to try to get whatever reset happens next summer too.

In a long term deal for next year, the value of the first two years are still set by two tags. And then they'd be negotiating what they think the true UFA years look like.

At least that's my understanding of how it works...

Wasn't that the first year of Khan and Weidl not surprised they went OL in the first round.

Lots of fans complained before the pick that they were too focused on defense and needed to go offense, OL in particular.

    Well that makes no sense

Why get rid of a good player for a rookie who may be a bust

Do you work for the Pirates :smiley1:

And it's not like we didn't address the CB position in that very draft. We picked Porter at 32. Which was a great pick (sadly rare for us these days IMO). I'd argue that he's comparable to Gonzalez (which is exactly what his agent will be arguing currently).

And while it looks like Jones will turn out to be less than what we hoped, taking a swing on a potential LT of the future was a reasonable decision IMO. Especially since we got a CB who was approximately the same that the CB hindsight says we could have drafted @ 14 (Gonzalez) at 2.1 (less risk than the typical 32nd overall pick since he was a 2nd rounder).

I think we can say the same thing about the TF pick, which looks to be panning out (although it's still early). And for the Max pick. If you get a chance to pick up a guy who plays a valuable position that will be on the team for over a decade if he pans out, you take it.

Lord do I know, I was begging us to draft him and then Porter in the 2nd. We would be broke trying to sign both, but dang the secondary we would have had

Great idea, maybe we can draft another Artie Burns or Senquez Golson.

    Winner.
It makes no sense to me.
Qb, and CB are the two hardest positions to judge from college to the NFL.
When You find a Qb, or a CB that is around the top 10, you don't f**k around, and let them walk away from your team. They are too hard to replace.

And then we took Porter like 18 picks later or whatever.

Pretty similar players. Presumably we wouldn't have taken both.

So we got a CB that's basically the same value and we got to take a shot at a long term LT (which unfortunately didn't work out).

We could have had the best secondary in the NFL if they listened to me. Instead we got a great CB, and a OL who may not ever play again, and wasn't great when he did

Were you saying that we pick both?

Double dipping at 14 and 32 would have been pretty bold of them to do. But you're right that it would have worked in this case.

And since Jones seems to be headed for UFA, it would have worked here.

My guess is that it's historically pretty unlikely to take two picks that close together at the top of the draft on the same position. And if we did, we'd probably have to say goodbye to one of them after this year. And the one we didn't extend this offseason might have also tried to force a trade. My guess is that we wouldn't have wanted ~ $60MM tied up at CB. Although we could have probably done it if we didn't extend Herbig.

Early picks working out is a great problem to have though. And sadly one we haven't had as frequently as we'd like for the last...what decade?

    I was definitely saying that.
You can go back, and read the old draft board of that year. I wanted both, and when I seen we actually could do it , I was so excited.
You will also see where people downed me because I thought the 1st was too high for Jones. Hell some even stupidly said I didn't want B. Jones because he played for Georgia. LoL.
We doubled down with LBs with Timmons, and Woodley.
1st, and 2nd round. Believe that work out well.

It’s a running joke on this board during the draft that STD would take a CB in every rd.

In the end. I’m happy with the way it has all turned out, they still got Porter and even know Jones was a miss they have completed building the line which was the goal they set out to do when bringing Weidl onboard. On paper anyway, still has to translate to the field but I believe it will.

And the book isnt closed on Jones, if he can come back from his injury, he can still contribute, a deep line is necessary to overcome injuries and make a run at the title.
