The Odyssey movie. The script, casting, costumes, and plot line do not match the original story. The movie is loaded with modern political references that have nothing to do with the ancient tale, so I hear. But will the movie be good? It does have a good lead actor and director. And for sure the special effects will be good.

My $20 bucks is already spent.

I will wait till it hits a movie channel.
I will never understand the change of characters. If a writer wanted someone to look a certain way they would write them that way. I know this is a hard concept for many, but the Author of a tale decides what the character looks like, and can choose from anything in their minds.
If a character is written purple, I want them to be purple if they make the movie. Nothing more , nothing less.

I read a reviewer who felt the Coen Bros did a better job of depicting the Odyssey in Oh Brother vs Nolan's modernized (check all the Hollywood boxes) depiction. I think it was a tongue in cheek commentary but I like Coen Bros movies a lot.

Well, the movie business is in decline, but hype remains its strongest point. I’ll see the movie this week because I’m genuinely interested in the subject matter. Some of the minor characters feel miscast, and the costumes, and boats are way off — they don’t reflect what the ancient Greeks actually wore / used. The costume design deserves real critique.

In Nolan’s 2026 The Odyssey, John Papsidera served as casting director and Ellen Mirojnick as wardrobe designer. I think both could use a serious ancient history lesson if their goal was to stay true to Homer. Helen of Troy was not of African lineage, and the casting director clearly needs a refresher on that. I just wish Hollywood would treat this material with more respect for the source. I’ve also heard the 2026 Greeks are quite upset, so maybe skip the movie reviews coming out of Athens.

That said, will the movie live up to all the hype it has generated? Nolan is a talented director and Matt Damon is a very good actor, so I’m optimistic those two will deliver. I’m a big fan of both men’s work.

They had a lot of cool movies. Stoner movies for sure. Hard to pick a favorite. Top 3 for me: Fargo, The Big Lebowski and No Country for Old Men. Honorable mention, Raising Arizona.

People are wasting their time complaining about some of the casting choices the Helen character has like five minutes of screen time.

Would you say the same if Blade was a white Norwegian in in the last Deadpool movie?
I believe he was only in it for a little over 5 minutes. I know I would have been clearly upset, but Im a huge fan of Blade so:shrug:.
Its pretty simple to me, writers can make the characters anything they want, and they do, so if you are going to do the characters in a movie, simply make them as they are written.

Last I checked The Odyssey is a fictional myth, so what if the director changed a minor character in his movie .

So is Blade. So is almost everything you watch.
Again if a writer writes a character a certain way ,he/she does so because that how they want them to be so if You make a movie of it, make them that way. Simple.

So is Black Panther, yet they made sure they only used people of color even to work off set.
I myself would not have watched Black Panther if he was anything other than of dark skin, but since I read the comics for 40, or more years, I wouldn't want him to be anything different.
Authors , and writers don't describe characters just for the hell of it. If its written a certain way, and you make a movie of it, do it that way, otherwise don't ride the skirt tails of someone else's already wide know work, and come up with your own.

That's why I used Blade in Deadpool 3, because He only had 5 minutes. Don't make excuses. If the character is written that way , make them that way, or don't do the story, and make Your own story.

I actually read two different translations of the Odyssey, so you don't tell me.
Im not talking about Helen. Im talking about the need to change what a writer writes. Tell me how many Greek soldiers were woman, had their breast removed, and took hormones to be a man?? These people are just casting these people because they want to stir the pot. Otherwise why do it?
I can give you many, many examples of this.
Its all fun , and games until it goes the other way.
Why anyone would want to cast a character different then they were written is beyond me, and if they really wanted to do so, why not write their own story.
I'll tell You why ,because nobody is going to watch it, so they take stories that are already popular.
