My guess is that Alex doesn't count the Chief of Staff (1) or the Strength and Conditioning coaches (4) for any of the teams. When he breaks down the coaches for all the teams, he gives how many on Offense / Defense / ST. And these guys wouldn't fit in any of these categories.

    That gets him to 21.

Seems like his methodology is consistent across all the teams. So if they give guys similar titles across the "industry", it shouldn't affect the result.

It would be interesting if young coaches give guys with these types of roles titles that associate them with the O / D. Then they'd show up for other teams, but not the Steelers. And the entire "small staff" thing would be moot.

This might be an interesting question if anyone here emails their podcast for the listener Q&A part.

21 is still greater than 19 and 3 more than Tomlins 2022 staff.

I dont think the argument was Steelers dont have the biggest staff in the league, it was the Steelers routinely had the smallest staff in the league and that more coaches could be helpful.

Also, lets look at the two extra coaches he added.

    Eric Simonelli: Offensive Quality Control/Analytics
    Tim Berbenich: Game Management/Quarterbacks

Both these guys are responsible for analytics and infusing it into the game. Thats a huge departure from Tomlin who was a go from your gut type coach.

McCarthy also added Steve Scarnecchia who is the COS. Another new addition but not counted by Alex when he was breaking down staffs but he plays a vital roll and basically organizes everything allowing McCarthy to actually coach and focus on the players.

Will any of this result in a SB this year, doubtful without a QB but what is happening is you are seeing seeds planted to change the culture or the organization, a common critique by former players and analysis alike, that the Steelers have lost their way and have no culture anymore.

McCarthy is implementing a plan and building for better results over the next 5 years.

Don’t all of these coaches eventually start to trip over each other

And is the RB coach telling the RBs how to run patterns the same way the WR coach is

On the podcast, Alex talked about how NFL staffs have been increasing over time since he started doing this (maybe since 2021 or something?).

It's not even all that long. But IIRC, he said that our current staff (t-smallest) would have been one of the largest staffs in the first year he did the study.

The internet says that 13 players on that team are currently in the hall. 14 if you count Noll. Dungy is in because of his coaching.

    I'd say that ~ 2 HoF's / 1 coach is a pretty good ratio! :drinks:

In the locker room before their first Super Bowl vs MN the team was nervous. Chuck Noll did not give them a rah rah speech. He just told them “If you do what you have been coached to do, you will win the game”.

Belacheat very similar told players don’t worry about the guy next to you just do your job the way you have been taught.
