He said under Mike McDaniel's offense, he is learning to throw to a spot where the receiver will be rather than trusting his arm to throw to an open guy.

He's just learning this? I remember Ben had to go through that evolution early in his career, but I assumed that after six seasons that would be the norm for Herbert. I assumed that it is the norm for all starting QBs. Apparently not.

Ben was talking about this in his latest podcast. He learned to trust his receivers would be there where he threw to. Specifically mentioning Hines and AB.

It is funny; Everyone is forgetting that Mike McDaniel was the Offensive Coordinator of the 49ers when they drafted Trey Lance.

Trey Lance was drafted in 2021 by Mike McDaniel, and then he left and became Miami's Head coach in 2022. Trey Lance fell apart after Mike McDaniel left.

It is going to be funny watching Trey Lance and Mike McDaniel do something this year, if Herbert goes down.

Tom Brady stated it best. College QBs who are arriving to the NFL do not have the pre requisite fundamentals, basics or principles of the position understood at the level required to play QB the way it is supposed to be played. Joe Burrow remains the only QB I have scouted since 2020 to do so. Everyone else is close but no cigar; Trevor Lawrence included.

I remember having a very high grade on Justin Herbert given his tremendous potential and latent talent. That said, it is now fair to suggest he simply isn't a player who will get the Chargers where they need to be. However, this does confirm something else.

Quarterbacks like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes are the only types of QBs that can truly be called "Franchise Caliber QBs." They are the tried and true tides that lift all boats. Beyond those two, no other QB possesses those special qualities.

Funny I remember the grief people were giving to Allar when Mike McCarthy was working on his footwork and was telling him not to worry about throwing the ball.

Justin Herbert is not even being allowed to throw a football as Mike McDaniels breaks down his footwork at practice.
Onlookers might have been a little confused to hear that Herbert has spent multiple practices in the early summer not throwing at all.

    It's all about the footwork.

Footage has shown Herbert working with a big green exercise ball and focusing on a new foot alignment while in the shotgun formation.

People were giving Allar grief for the same thing. In general though, people have become far too enamored with raw physical talent over the tried and true fundamentals of the position. I wasn't among them. If anything, my dream scenario was for both Aaron Rodgers to return and Allar getting drafted to be red shirted while learning.

Both have happened. Barring injury, Allar's development will be consistent and persistent. Up to him if he wants to be "the guy" or not. How this can be answered isn't just in the 2026 Training Camp nor Pre Season but also how Allar develops throughout the 2026 Season as a whole.

I find this article funny and sad. Growing up in the early 70''s we knew how to
lead a receiver., throw receiver open, throw to a spot. Basic QB fundamentals.
