Graphic proves your point; 4th quarter in the NFL is worst for turnovers. However, the Steelers worst quarter was the 3rd. Oddly, the NFL average drops in the 3rd quarter.

Note that the Steelers generally started the first half much better than league average. Conservative playcalling? Less aggressive defenses?

    Turnover are critical, I agree...
The two most important team stats I look at are:
    - Turnovers: For reasons mentioned already..
    - 3rd Down: Both offense and Defense. The Defense needs to get off the field. The Offense needs to stay on the field. Staying on the field - longer T.O.P. and better chances of scoring. If the defense gets those TO's, then more opportunities.

I know my post had the feel of promoting Austin whom I though was boring and unimaginative but one must consider his defenses were mid-pack. So-so.
It also didn't shine a lot for Graham, but I do have some hope with him as in reviewing film, he had some real dud defenses. His 2 stints in New York weren't special, but the 2nd stint where he was the DC, he had some interesting designs and wasn't horrible.
I hope he does well here.

Are you serious. This is all about some damn Participation Trophy you are trying to give the Steelers Defense for finishing 17th last year. 17 out of 32 is not even in the top Half of the league. 26th or 17th does it really matter?

I guess if you spend $90 million you want your trophy for Showing Up. :)

This is accurate despite one poster's false claim to the contrary. (I think that is just a Penn State guy who couldn't get over hating the Pitt quarterback.) That he didn't throw enough touchdown passes doesn't change that he quickly developed into a quarterback who took care of the football. It is no surprise that a rookie would struggle with turnovers in his first few games, as Pickett did. He threw eight interceptions in his first five appearances as a Steeler. He threw only one the rest of his rookie season and only four in 12 starts in 2023.

Unfortunately, this was part of the problem. The team had him so heavily focused on protecting the ball that it took away his aggressiveness, especially on passes over the middle.

He had the longest active streak in the NFL for passes without a pick when he left the Steelers. I'm not sure how far he extended that with the Eagles.

    HFS people!!!!
You guys are trying so hard to twist logic just to be right.

How many times have You seen the loser of a game have more yards than the winner??????????
I know I've seen it more than I can count.
Now how many times have you seen the loser have more points than the winner???
    Answer: None Times. LoL
So therefore it's a simple, and not mind-boggling leap that says points are more important than yards.
    GEEZZZZ!!!!!

Sure, if you want to work off a false premise, this logic might hold up. I already gave you three excellent examples that clearly demonstrate the massive flaws in your logic.

We are talking about evaluating a defense. If a team wins a game by a score of 49-45, the defense gave up less points than the other team, but did they play well? Almost definitely not. (Unless the opposing team scored three or four touchdowns on defense and returns.)

Relying solely on points to evaluate a defense is overly simplistic and foolish. You know better.

    I didn't even read this. I don't believe in twisting logic .
Just simply answer these two questions.

Have You ever seen the loser of a game have more yards than the winner???
Have You ever seen the loser of a game have more points than the winner???
If You answered the question with a yes, and a no, there is nothing more to say.
Points are more important than yards.

Relying on any one statistic to evaluate a defense is overly simplistic and inaccurate. Is that simple and direct enough for you?

Also, please stop falsely accusing me of twisting logic. Your premise is, at best, misleading.
