Normally I would say July based on past experience but Herbig happened quickly

But his agent screwed around with his first contract and the Steelers held firm so who knows

    Yep.

    It will get done.

But Porter has a father who's been through this before. He knows that you get more money by waiting as long as possible.

Same reason Watt always pushes right to the deadline.

Are you listening to any of the reports about how PORTER is doing the TJ Watt Hold-In thing and not participating in practice? He has a brand-new defense to learn, and right now he is just standing on the sideline not participating.

    The Depth Chart?

I have not heard about Herbig starting over Watt or Highsmith. Have you heard different; that now Watt or Highsmith has been benched for Herbig???

Any reports that PORTER is participating in individual or team drills yet?

I thought you were saying Porter was going to play out his final year of his current contract. Right now Porter is refusing to practice until he gets a new contract.

The Steelers have to do something, but only if they want him to Practice and Play this year. :)

I think the only consideration in that regard is that if they wait another season to sign Porter, the price is going to go up considerably. It's just a reality in the NFL. The salary cap keeps going up and the top players at every position continue to get contracts that raise the price of signing similar players going forward.

The best scenario would be for the Steelers and Porter to come to an agreement that works long term for the team and for the player. The Steelers will sign a young, top cornerback for the foreseeable future at a more reasonable rate, and Porter gets his big contract and signing bonus and all the security that brings to him and his family.

I get what you're saying, but financially it makes more sense long-term to sign him sooner rather than later. They may have to restructure some contracts of other players that they plan on keeping here long-term, but I think that it will ultimately be more beneficial to do so.

Only one defensive player can be on the field with a green dot at one time, but up to three different defensive players can be designated to wear a helmet with a green dot. One primary user and two backup users.

It can be done if they want to do it. They have always been able to do it if they truly wanted to. Let's see if that changes this season.

I agree to sign him now and I expect they will

My only point is they do not have a gun to their head so they can sign him now if both sides are fair

If not then so be it

I HOPE so. I'd be okay with trading both if we can get back unexpectedly high draft picks OR a pretty good young MLB or Edge back in their place with a draft pick or other.

Porter should not be given a new contract this year. If he doesn't like it then trade him or let him rot on the sideline. To get big money he needs to improve on run support and keep the grabbing to a minimum. If they give him a new contract next year, it should not be for an outrageous amount. He is not the bees knees.

Official depth chart doesn't get released for a while. My only point is that this is a new coaching staff and they don't have to keep everyone as they were. In fact, I hope they don't.

This could be one of the biggest mistakes the Steelers ever made, will see what happens with Watt and Highsmith this offseason first.
25 million seems a tad much. 18 would have been a lot. Highsmith is getting traded IMO.

Porter will get paid and deserves to get paid. He’s become one of the top CBs in the league in a short amount of time.

Good. A bit more than expected but the guaranteed money is much less than 100M. Porter will get paid too and it'll be a big number. Omar will always figure that stuff out. That is a ton of $ on the edge for three guys that really need to stay on the field and produce, especially when there are concerns about the ILBs.

Why? Porter is the best drafted corner we've had since William Gay, Keenan Lewis and Ike Taylor. And that was a long damn time ago. This just shows how bad it's been at CB for Steelers for over a decade.

I think Watt's decline is partially due to age and partially because our defensive system was focused on stopping explosive passing plays at the expense of giving up cheap quick hitters and trying to tackle the catch.

Hopefully we can tune the 2nd part of this so that he can at least be in double digits for sacks.
