The 2027 QB class

Brendan Sorby can be added to the 2026 supplemental draft. Te NCAA has rejected his appeal.

 

Stand by what I said until the CFB season starts. Julian Sayin is the QB who is the only one I have a First Round Grade on. He is the most consistent, most proficient and most polished among all QBs with a very good arm to boot. His greatest weapon though is his deep ball accuracy; 62.5% on throws greater than 20 yards. That is nuts.


Nico, CJ Carr and Arch are all the wildcards for me. Nico needs greater overall consistency, CJ must improve his overall understanding on how the flow of the game is going (though this will come with experience) and Arch must improve his overall field reading for that was arguably his biggest weakness.

 

In a QB starved league I think we will see another draft class like 2024 when like 6 QBs go in the first round.

 

Not stating that such won't happen. For me, it isn't about if a player goes in Round One. It is about if a player can return the value in the position they are selected.


More often than not, that answer is no. For example, Bo Nix was picked 12th overall in the 2024 Draft. To date, he has yet to showcase the return value of a QB selected that high.

 

I generally agree here, except that I don't even have a 1st rd grade on Sayin just yet...
Dante Moore turned his back on the #2 overall pick this yr (smart move)
Arch has his name and the obvious tutelage he's getting from the family... but i'm not a fan of his deep ball accuracy... furthermore, his timing needs work as well..
LaNorris Sellers has the most intriguing physical gifts, but hasn't turned it into on field production just yet,
And so on.........
I do believe many qb's will be overdrafted through desperation though

 

Left off Sellers for I now have a 5th Round Grade on him at the moment. Way too traits heavy and very little polish overall at the position. At one point, I was looking forward to him this season but after watching all of his 2025 tape?! Yikes. Truth be told, I honestly don't believe he declares even in 2027 unless he has grown so much during the course of this time period.


As for Dante Moore?! He is a natural born passer with some capabilities to create plays off script. For me, the issues lie with both his short area accuracy to how badly he breaks down when pressure is in his face. His frame is also a major concern; 206lbs as a QB in the NFL isn't going to cut it. However, I will say this. I do have a higher grade on Moore than I do Manning. Better eye manipulation, better field reading ability, superior release speed of the football and a much better understanding of how the flow of the game unfolds and most of all, how to adapt to the major changes to it.


Understanding how to navigate the ebbs and flows of a game as a QB doesn't appear to be much on the surface. However, given how a QB must be calm and composed during the game, having the ability to do so vs not to do so is a key ingredient on what separates good QBs from great ones.

 

Nix was going to the Super Bowl last season if he doesn't get injured in the playoffs, he might not be an elite franchise QB but a QB you can win in the playoffs with.

Bo Nix also had a stacked team to do so as well. Let's not forget that while a QB can get you to the Super Bowl, it takes the entire team to win it more often than not. Bo is a very good game manager but nothing more to me.


He is a very good fit for Sean Paytons Offense. That said, he isn't what I would constitute a Franchise QB. Franchise QBs are the tides that lift all boats. Nix isn't that and it is fair to question if he even can be that.

 

Nix is the similar type of QB I expect the Steelers to draft next year, the elite guys will go top 8 most likely. That's why you build up the team around him, so he doesn't have to carry the load.

By virtue of that definition, he isn't a Franchise QB then. That said, very seldom do I have QB Prospects rated that high anymore anyways. The QB Position is heavily rooted in the basics, fundamentals and principles of the position absent extreme factors. Such factors include freakshow arm talent, freakshow arm strength, freakshow athleticism, a combination of the two or all three. Now, with all three... there is some, and I stress some runway.


However, if said player cannot operate the position from the pocket using the proper tools that translate to the NFL, that QB will only get by so much due to his freakish abilities (Cam Newton) or will flame out due to having a severe lack of everything else (Justin Fields). Patrick Mahomes has both the freakshow arm talent and strength but what separates him from others is that his level of freakshow abilities, even by the definitions standards, are truly the exception.


Mahomes has some of the worst footwork I have ever seen from a QB.... which doesn't matter given how his arm essentially nullifies everything else. Problem is every QB is looking for that type of QB and those types of QBs simply don't come around that often. What the NFL has largely forgotten about is what the position is (very fundamentalist by default) and how the position must be played (tools that have been shown to translate to the NFL time after time).


Given how Nix still holds onto the ball way too long, stares down receivers at times, has inconsistent release speed and isn't a full field reading QB, my concerns are valid for they are objective as far as how high Nix's ceiling is; how tremendous the team is around him literally being that ceiling.


I am not saying Franchise QBs don't need help; they all do. However, the ones that can get by with just enough vs those that need the entire US Naval Pacific Fleet are what separate the good ones from the great ones.

 

Sayin is the most natural passer his age I have even seen. That arm and the accuracy combined are special. Usually a player is strong at one or the other. He's both.

Did Sayin look special against Indiana and Miami?

 

He did not.


That said, Joel does have a point. Prior to that, Julian repeatedly flashed special Franchise QB traits from his first 12 games. Namely that Deep Ball Accuracy. Unlike most QBs who can launch it deep with good accuracy, Julian's is a legitimate weapon. Having a 62.5% completion rate on deep passes 20 yards or more doesn't sound like much but one has to remember the context of the stat itself. Deep Passes involve many operating aspects; much of which stem from the QB itself. Is the QB throwing into the spot he should, does that QB have the arm strength necessary to generate that velocity that spot, is he giving his receiving option the best spot overall to make the play, to name a few. Sayin's Deep Ball is some of the best I have ever tracked. That said though and, as it bears repeating... for the first 12 games.


I do concede and award you the final two games against Indiana and Miami. His performances in those games were unacceptable. For me though, these two games were Sayin's worst for his worst attributes came into play; his biggest being having to double check on his receiving option before releasing the Football. Overall, Sayin does possess an NFL Caliber release speed along with quasi NFL Caliber decision making. For whatever reason though, doubly so in the Indiana and Miami games, he just kept second guessing his targets and placement at the worst possible time. Regardless of reason, it wasn't good.


I do expect him to rebound this season though; all the more reason I have him as my only one currently.

Sayin possesses all the natural attributes that I want in an NFL Franchise Caliber QB. Others do have a bigger arm, better athleticism or even equal to superior decision making but none have the combination of impressive footwork both in pocket and under duress, field reading capability, overall accuracy, adaptability, short term memory, processing ability, pocket manipulation, pocket poise nor ball placement that Sayin does.


Sayin did have two terrible games against the likes of Indiana and Miami but the aforementioned positives were not the sole reason. I attribute that to him second guessing his locked on options longer than he should; a lack of decisiveness. Again, his release speed is very good but he needs to just let the damn ball rip once he sees the option is available to make the play.


Should he do that in 2027?! Pretty sure I will have a new number one in my Top 32.

2024 was 100% QB crazy. All 6 QBs were TOP 10 picks, with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pick of the draft being a QB.

I don't know if there has ever been 6 QBs going in the Top 10 before.
