DK Metcalf's cap hit for 2026 is $31 million and Pickens is the better player.

And Pickens is also a locker room cancer who nobody in the Steelers organization seemed to like.

I don't know why you keep going on about trading Pickens they weren't going to keep him long term anyway.

The Steelers were weaker team in 2025 because they made that trade. That is inarguable among the sane. They could have had an elite receiver for at least the 2026 season, at a lower cap number than Metcalf, with the sort of offensive-minded coach who would have probably made him happier, for the 2026 season.

I am posting about it again today because others brought him up. mac is the one who brought him up again on this thread, not me. The same thing happened with another poster bringing him up on a different thread. You should direct your question to those guys.

So what even if they had kept Pickens they weren't going to win the Super Bowl last season. You know what happens when you're frequently late at your job your employer gets rid of you, part of the reason they got rid of Pickens.

That logic would make sense if they didn't replace him with another immature jackass who is less talented and costs more.

At least Pickens never cost his team one game and nearly cost them a playoff berth by getting himself suspended.

And the best unemployed Najee could get a year ago was $5.25M

Yet somehow he was worth giving a guaranteed 5th year

    LMAO

A person has to be truly desperate to use something the Jets did as indicative of anything. Then again, look at the source.

It's not really reasonable to compare the cap hit of a 1 year franchise tag to a multi-year deal with a big signing bonus.

If you do that in year 1, you'll think "wow!!! what an awesome deal!!!". Because the first year of a multi year deal typically has a very low cap hit because 1st year salaries are generally very low because they player gets a huge amount of cash via signing bonus.

Then after year 1, you get the prorated amount of the signing bonus on top of what is a more normal annual salary.

So while you're correct that Metcalf's 2nd year cap hit is more than the franchise tag, the comparison doesn't really mean anything if you understand how contracts work and how SBs are prorated.

Aside1: I wanted to keep Pickens last year, so this isn't an anti-Pickens post.

Aside2: Also, has he signed the tag yet? Last I heard is that he is threatening not to play under the tag because he wants a big multi-year deal. The Cowboys are apparently telling him to go pound sand. My guess is that something gets worked out here...but not until closer to the deadline. He's pretty unlikely to go full Bell IMO.

Note that if he gets that deal, his 1st year cap hit will look really good. But the SB will basically make him uncuttable for some lenght of time (depending on how long the contract is) because accelerating all the deferred cap hit is brutal if you do it early in a contract.
