Jack Campbell

Do we have what It takes in tradeable assets and a future pic to pry Campbell from the Lions? Highsmith? (They need another rusher), and Queen? Wilson? Any others make good business to trade? And a future pic? Campbell will be an upgrade and I think he's only 25. Could the money work? I admit, I've complained lately about out our talent, but the more I read, I think we're close to having very good roster. Maybe some of you guys that have been doing serious roster planning and draft work for years could lend an opinion. And if not Campbell, is there another player at another position of need we could pursue in trade this off-season?

 

Why would the Lions want to move on from their 2023 1st round draft pick? 3 years in the league and he already has 402 total tackles and he is getting better every year!



I remember when they took Campbell in the 1st and I thought they reached on the pick. I guess I was wrong.

 

I think they declined his 5th year option, because the league groups OLB and ILB together and they didn't want to pay that.

Should he continue his current pace, Jack Campbell will be a HOF if not First Ballot. He plays the position in the manner that it was meant to be played. For such a position that isn't thought of as much anymore, nabbing that dude at the MLB spot is going to become relevant yet again. My evidence is the return of the big MLBs that have been within College Football entering the draft within the past three seasons.


I agree 100% with @Blast Furnace that I wanted him as well but after giving him a second look in my scouting notes, I laughed it off. Pretty sure I had him marked as a Top 20 Player via my final notes but not sure if I awarded him a Top 15 honor that Draft Cycle.

Same reason it's really hard for a center to be valued as a 1st round pick. If you option them, you have to pay them like a LT.

 

At Steelers Universe, I listed him as one of the must have guys from that draft. A foundational piece that any team should make sure they land in the draft. Alas, that is now among the ashes of that message board, just like the opportunity to draft him.

 

I freely admit this is hindsight, but can we all agree that the Steelers would be better off right now if they had taken Campbell instead of Broderick Jones? I'm asking for a friend.

 

Should Campbell stay healthy, he is getting paid and paid handsomely. Detroit might not be able to afford him. Hopefully Pittsburgh at least gives him a look. Pittsburgh has been desperately trying to solve their Ryan Shazier Issue since 2017; little to no success.


Jack Campbell would be an excellent pickup. Last time Pittsburgh picked up an ILB who was ascending, it turned out pretty damn well in James Farrior. Campbell has even greater impact than James did when he was with the Jets.


He is worth both the price tag along with being the solution to what will soon be a decade long issue.

I saw they declined the option which made me start thinking, and some saying they need more pass rush. Also, I would love for the Steelers to be very aggressive for once and go for a bold move to fill a need with a young star as well as let go of a couple older guys and their contracts if possible. And I would also give a pic next year for that type of player. I'm just an old fan, but I'd give Highsmith, Queen and our third next year for Campbell but I'm not a good judge of pic values or trade values.

Crazy long shot I know. Queen is only going to decline, we have Herbig and Sawyer to replace Highsmith. Give them a pic next year.... sometimes you have to go big to get better. Thanks for the fair assessment AQL.

 

He can't be that good, because surely to be drafted, and be a good draft pick you must have a losing season, and draft in the top 10 , and we know that neither was what happened. LoL

 

The Jets didn't understand what they had in Farrior, often misusing him as an outside linebacker. He played outside in a 3-4 defense for them as a rookie, spent most of the next three seasons as a backup getting occasional starts, then played outside in a 4-3 in 2001. The Steelers brought him in to play inside in their 3-4 and he blossomed.

Campbell has no such issues in Detroit. He has already been showing how good he is at his job, so even if he does leave Detroit, he won't come cheaply.

 

Also, I was told that teams shouldn't spend first-round picks on safeties or inside linebackers, so clearly, the Steelers were right to take Jones over Campbell. Right?
