I lived in Wisconsin. It was the stone age for the internet (Netscape was my browser of choice when on campus in a computer lab, and I needed a 5" floppy disk to access my email).

We only had landline phones and an answering machine (translation for the yutes: my pocket didn't ping me with an alert when this happened) - but one was a cordless that you could damn near make it to the mailbox with while still talking to someone.

jeh was still a grumpy old man chasing kids off the front lawn.

Tuned in to the evening SportsCenter after work that evening to get the draft recap - back when Dan Patrick and Keith Olberman at 10pm was THE show to watch, especially on Sundays.

About fell over when I saw we'd pulled this off

after the Rams used the sixth overall pick on one Lawrence Phillips.

One of the biggest heists in NFL History. A Hall of Fame Running Back in exchange for a trivia question?! I would imagine that a lot of people would take that deal 10 times out of 10 and every hour on the hour on Sundays.

Wasn't Phillips part of the Nebraska team that kept Penn State from winning the National Championship in 95? I was listening to a comedian named Josh Johnson the other day who will do a full one hour set on one topic describing the internet in the early days to young people. He went on about the internet came to your house in the mail and you had a CD, then stop an go CD's are like round disks that music and information came on after cassette tapes. But he talked about helping his mom move recently and having to throw out like 20 AOL hour internet CD's. Kids these days dont know the struggle

Should be a National Holiday or at least regional and celebrated by every Steeler fan around the globe. Funny, I got to see the Bus run roughshod over the Steelers the prior season when the Rams were playing in Anaheim (near Disneyland) and all us Steeler fans hated him until the news broke the following spring about acquiring him. A rare mid-season Steeler pickup who went on to have a great and long career with the Steelers. Can't think off-hand anyone else who did that for this team anywhere that long and impactful who wasn't home grown as a draft pick?

Lawrence Phillips - what a sad story of self destruction. He was a "can't miss" celeb from So Cal starting in high school to Nebraska to the LA Rams. Because of his gangsta past and mentality, spent more time in prison than playing football. Ended up hanging himself at age 40 in his cell serving a 31 yr sentence while awaiting trial for killing his cellmate.

Corrected - USC to Nebraska. Thanks Thorn.

My bad - he was in the LA sports papers so much in HS that it seemed like he played locally in college as well. He still was a very troubled person.

Only reason I know that was because a guy I worked with was a huge Cornhusker fan and we had a bet on who'd be the National Champion between Nebraska and Penn State. I lost because Paterno didnt believe in running up the score while Osborne did.

It might have been because they went back to back and just was doing the math from 96 when the trade happened.
