One of the main draws of him returning is to help the other quarterbacks learn the offense because of his knowledge of it and how to operate in it. The less time that he is with the team to help them with that process, the less important it is to have him in the building or on the roster.

We need a QB class like 2024 where at least 6 guys go in the first round, then the Steelers just need to trade up into the top 12.

I'd imagine that Rudolph would be QB1 if things started up today. But they'd be giving Howard every opportunity to win the job.

I just can't imagine Rooney (we're never going to tank) buying off on having a guy who's never even taken a snap in a preseason game running the show on offense.

He'd have to prove himself before getting the right IMO.

Although, if they knew Rodgers was in but wants to opt out of the preseason (especially camp) then I think having Howard getting work as the QB1 to see if he can be the primary backup makes a lot of sense.

Then Rodgers joins up at the end of camp with the QB1 role. Brings all the receivers and TEs out to his place for his own camp.

I'd be in favor of this.

I just can't see Rooney being OK with it. Since it's the polar opposite of how he's run the team in the recent past.

I thought the Steelers told Rodgers they needed to know if he was coming back by thr time the draft started?

Rudolph is fine at #2 QB, written in stone for all I care. Just think that Howard, draft pick or Rodgers should be #1.

They probably won’t ignore his $166,666.67 weekly paycheck

You can ignore me for that

Heck one preseason Tomlin did not give a single snap to Charlie Batch and then
Like dominos the 3 quarterbacks in front of him went down to injury

Im not advocating for Rudolph to start, I just notice that he never comes up in conversation when talking about the QB room, whether it be McCarthy or beat writers or whoever. He’s the forgotten man.

Personally I think he will be cut before the season.

Don't know if there's any FA backups out there any better than Rudolph. Probably wise to keep him. He's got experience. Loss to the Bears last year was not his fault... I blame the D more for that loss than offense.

This isnt Tomlin team anymore where Rudolph is extremely comfortable playing in. I think we are more likely to get the Rudolph that played at Tennessee.

But I think it will depend on Rodgers, I believe they are drafting a QB no matter what which in that case, Rudolph would be the odd man out if Rodgers returns. Numbers game.

Some of you are getting too worked up. Kahn and Rooney are fully aware Rodgers likes to take his time.
Whether he comes back or not, you're not changing your draft strategy for a 40+ QB with no long-term future here.

If he retires, you're not REACHING for a lower rated QB regardless. You'd be better off draft two, say round 3 and round 5/6 and compet with Howard and Rudolph.

If he stays, you're not ignoring the QB in the draft either. I'd say the same strategy above, except maybe you just draft ONE QB in round 3 or 4 (or 5/6 if you like a darkhorse with good upside rather than the big-school QB with some warts and limitations). Maybe Rodgers comes back you take the North Dakota QB for the upside and if necessary, draft a QB high next year.

You errored, they won the division because FHC-MT WILLED them into the playoffs. They were obviously a 3 or 4 win team that was carried by an all-time great HC.

The Pens and Steelers should have just swapped Sullivan and Tomlin so they could both be all-time greats in TWO sports.

Will Howard falls into a trait that Mike McCarthy likes. QB that have played in
cold weather climates. I agree with him on this. Will always prefer QB who grew up
In cold weather climate or can play in one very important for our division.

Anything is possible but he is cheap and the Steelers always keep a veteran backup and right now he is it

Now if they draft someone in say round 3 and sign Rodgers then he is probably toast

I think that being up close with McCarthy gives both Rudolph and Howard better QB coaching than they would have received any time previously with the Steelers.

Are you mad that Howard will get extra practice snaps over Rodgers? Isn't that what he needs?

I like the tactic of naming Howard QB1 for now.
