That is not true. Their on field work is brief, but they spend nearly 40 hours a week preparing, reviewing etc

The NFL and commissioner created this monster, by not holding the refs accountable for bad calls and this can't be touched mentality. Now, the league wants to rectify these things and the refs are saying ... "no thanks"! The refs figure that they now have the power.

Plus the subjective nature of the crews make it hard for players to know what is and isn't going to be called. Some call an inadvertent arm touching the QB's head as roughing the passer while others allow the QB to be turned like a pretzel or get a broken nose with no call. They can target the illegal formation because a tackle is too far off the los but also allow DB's to mug WR'S well after the 5 yard chuck zone. All depends on the crew and how they feel about the teams playing.

I was watching the NCAA men's hockey tournament this weekend and in Sunday's Minnesota-Duluth vs Michigan game the bulldogs scored late in the third to make it 3-4 and Michigan challenged the goal for goaltender interference. I was sitting there screaming he never touched the goalie until the puck was already in the net. It was a brilliant play no need for review.

I think quality of refs and correctness of calls won't change the amount of complaining people do.

Because people who complain about refs complain when calls are made that are bad for their team, not because the call is bad. I say this as someone who sometimes complains about refs.

If improving the call correctness reduced complaining, then video review would have led to fewer complaints about calls. But I think it's done the opposite. This is why if I was kind of the NFL for a day, I'd dramatically reduce video replay.

Here's an article from 2023 talking about NFL officials and saying that almost all of them have other jobs.

    https://sports.yahoo.com/full-17-part-time-officiating-130702807.html

To make that much money from working for the NFL and still having all the time in the world for a full-time job is a joke. Much more time needs to be put into their craft, and they need to be present at a central location or locations to watch film, run simulations, work out, and work on their craft in every way possible so they are best prepared for officiating games.

It's time to make these officials a full-time position with a full slate of duties each and every day like everyone else has to do for their money. These people are making more money than many doctors, lawyers, CEO's, and the list goes on. It is beyond ridiculous to make that much money for a side gig without any accountability and limited daily responsibilities and training.

For a business that generated over $23 million in revenue in 2025, not creating the ultimate form of officiating for the sport is a disservice to everyone that watches it and invests time and money into it.
