From what I’ve read, Arthur Smith wasn’t exactly Wilson’s biggest fan. But honestly, who can tell? The internet’s full of Steeler “experts” arguing with each other nonstop.

I don’t know how to make this clearer.

Regardless of offensive coordinator, when was Ben R prevented from throwing to all parts of the field, at almost any point in the game, and in any situation?

    I don’t remember any restrictions.

Ben was never hand cuffed ,but after he left Mike Tomlin started his hate to throw over the middle crap.. It was clear last season as well until late in games or no huddle ..

Our new Mike actually loves to attack the middle with the pass and runs outside zone and pitches and sweeps ...

Ok. Now think it all the way through.

    Wilson
    Rudolph
    Fields
    Rodgers

All played outside of Pittsburgh and struggled. Looking just at their struggle bus years (so throwing out the good part of Wilson and Rodgers career when they still had their legs) all “avoided” the middle at the same rate as they did while in Pittsburgh.

Tomlin had a HOF caliber QB in his prime and did not appear to direct his OC to avoid doing much of anything. Then Tomlin had a string of physically limited or diminished QBs who seemed to avoid trying certain things. Same QBs avoided doing those same things with other teams.

With those established facts, what’s more likely; Tomlin suddenly decided to mandate his offense avoid portions of the field or that he and the coaching staff determined that it was coaching malfeasance to have flawed QBs try and do things they weren’t able to do? Either way the reminder that multiple other coaching staffs made the same evaluation.

Its a play safe mentality ,is why I want AR back .. Mike is a throw the ball in the middle guy if his QB cant do it he will be replaced ..Wilson was never good pre snap or in the middle IMO..Mason should not even be on a NFL field ...Fields is dead above the neck so I get holding him back..AR can still throw and he is still very smart he was held back by the systems..

The new Coach who worked with him for years wants him and believes he can still run his system..I agree with him..

Why did Rodgers play the same way with the Jets with his hand picked coordinator?

Rodgers 2nd best year was 2016 he had 40 TD'S with Nelson, Adams and Cobb..
Rodgers best year was 2020 Adams, Lazard, and Valdese-Scantling

Now just look at the horrible group the Steelers gave him and he still threw for 3300 and 24 TDS ..Again thats great IMO with what he had to work with and work against a Coach that stated he did not like to throw the ball in the middle of the field..

Mike will upgrade our WR room big time no matter who the QB ends up being Mike like a certain type of WR and we really only have a half a one that fits his style..

But we’ve been talking about style of play. And Rodgers style of play is due to his age linked physical decline not Tomlin delivered edicts.

That’s the point I fail to see how so many Steelers fans aren’t willing to acknowledge. When your quarterback is limited, you don’t call certain things until you’ve got no other options. That wasn’t some Steelers centric approach.

Well to me it is easier to go gun and throw quick in the middle ,that's the safest way to protect a old QB , yet we still didn't do it..Heck its the 7 on 7 drill ..Do you remember when the Pats did it to us ? I don't think they got under Center once or ran the ball over 5 times..I am not saying we go that extreme , but that is proof of how to keep your QB clean..

Still unsure what I want to see happen at QB next year. Rodgers starting means you are delaying the QB position of the future, but if there is nobody here who can beat out 100 year old Aaron Rodgers then the future likely isn't here yet anyway. In an ideal situation, Howard arrives at camp, plays like a veteran stud, and wins the position. The only thing I'd hate to see is AR return and anointed without question (which would likely happen). If there is a competition then I'm good with him returning, even with "pole position" as it forces anyone who wants it to earn it.

65/67 charted QBs for attempts to the middle according to Oackers Reddit during the Lafluer portion of his Green Bay career. That won him an MVP or so….so demonstrates it’s not always a bad thing.

Next Gen stats has all his Jets charts.

I hope we don't wait forever to see what Rodgers wants to do-------If you don't want Howard then look at Mac Jones or someone else like Cousins --just Not TUA

I have no interest in waiting to see what Rodgers wants to do. I'm more interested in the team deciding what they want to do. I thought that the story was overblown last year and that the team knew all along what was going on and that he was coming. That said, this FO and staff needs to decide if AR is their guy or someone else is, and move forward with whichever option they choose. If that option isn't available, time to move on, but no waiting around.

He didn't start watching football till the 2000s, so most of what he talks about was the very last years of Cowher, and looking up stats.
I'm not downing him, all I'm saying is he didn't actually watch all of Cowhers coaching like most of us did. The difference between being aggressive on offense between Cowher, and Tomlin was way different. Tomlin was way more aggressive. It may be the times, the Qbs, or whatever, even people that hate Tomlin can't deny this.

Dude. Since I've been on here I've heard, and I laugh, and they get mad, but that Tomlin: calls the offense plays, Tomlin calls the Defensive plays, Tomlin does all our game plans, does our scouting, does our FA hiring, does our strength, and conditioning, does our drafting, does all hiring, and firing of all coaches, and apparently by some, even does medical stuff like giving shots, and inserting needles into players, was our GM, and owner, and president of football operations. Hell he may have had more jobs than any HC in the entire history of the NFL. No wonder he walked away. You can't pay enough for all that, and get booed.
This shows how slow some people actually are that believed all that.

    Yeah....it gets a little bizarre.

I know people think I am totally in the tank for Tomlin. I do freely admit that I believe he is a HOF coach. But what I am really pushing back against is just the lack of logic that seems to be supporting many opinions, positive and negative, regarding Steelers and "coaching".

I remember when Tomlin came in the change in aggressiveness on offense was something you could feel watching the games.

To be fair, Cowher was no shrinking violet. When he had the QB and the weapons, he went all out as well. I remember when he, Chan Gailey, and 5 wideouts broke the brains of most of the NFL. Cowher just didn't have the QB to do it too often.

he would have had a couple more if our receivers could catch. did MT make ben a check down charlie his last few years? rodgers also had good TE's with those receivers and good RB's to take some pressure off of him.

This is very true I think a smarter OC can get more out of Warren and Gainwell ,I also think he will use Mount Washington better .. This Team needs some WRS in a bad way .. Good Question on Ben ..

Watched 13th Warrior last night. It was a good movie, but I liked Beowulf TV series better.
