This is all about the QB

They should still take a QB this year. No reason to hitch the wagon to another round pick from Ohio State. Again, still waiting for someone to name a decent Ohio State QB. Stroud is falling fast

 

Well if he doesn’t develop quickly it will probably show up in the loss column which will position us to better to draft a QB next year.

 

Andy Reid is a great coach but let’s not kid ourselves. His success in KC is mainly because of Mahomes. In this league it’s all about getting the right QB. Vrabel was always a good coach but couldn’t get over the hump in Nashville and then all of a sudden he has a franchise QB in New England and he looks like a world beater.

The Steelers are already in the position of which you speak of with reference to not being able to attract young talent from a coaching standpoint at least offensively because we don’t have talent at the QB position. This coaching cycle didn’t offer as much talent in the way of young innovative OC’s to pluck from as years past. They all come with risks and none of them has shown the experience or ability to develop QB’s with the exception of Kubiak in Seattle. I would have preferred somebody like Kubiak but here we are.

‘you are right if this doesn’t work out we will be set back 5 years at least. But have we not already been set back 5 plus years under Art Rooney II? My biggest concern with the Steelers right now and Art Rooney II is his seemingly unwillingness to do it to a rebuild. The mediocrity consistently positions us to not be in a position to draft a franchise QB or build a championship caliber roster. The free agent signings to try to keep the team relevant have been absolutely horrible. Not a single free agent we brought in other than Seamalu has been a good one. Queen, DK Metcalf, Slay, Ramsey even Ogunjobi have all been terrible. We overspent and they all woefully underperformed. Rodgers was ok but he was a bandaid. He wasn’t going to take us to the SB. I had thought Tomlin was the delusional one all along making these desperate personnel decisions to try to stay relevant but it is looking like I was wrong.

I honestly am not that excited about Howard but for the sake of committing to a rebuild and avoiding kicking the can down the road and delaying the rebuild, I beg Rooney to be practical and not bring Rodgers back and start the process appropriately.

I at least feel good about the fact we will do it to see what we have in him this hopefully prevent us from reaching for a QB in this draft and thus waste a pick. I would rather see us draft a wr and build out the rest of the roster and see what we have in Howard this year and draft a QB next year.

 

after hearing all last year that we shouldn't draft a qb and wait and draft one this year and this class would be better. wrong!!!!!! now this class is bad and we need to wait until next year. wow one will magically appear next year. just stop already.

we have just hired Marty Ball. that's who McCarthy learned from. he likes to run the ball and can coach a QB to fit that system.

Dallas has a DC and owner that thought with all these fast guys up front on defense we can sack the other teams QB at will. they did pretty well at it too, but the other coaches are smart too and knew their big uglies could push these smaller fast guys around and they did.

Jerry Jones is like the flavor of the month guy. i am smarter than the rest. i will build this team and you guys make my dreams work. he has fired a lot of coaches that cannot make his downfalls work making it their fault and not his. he can't be wrong of course.

McCarthy won't have that here. let's see what he can build. will howard doesn't have to be tom brady. somewhere in between will be fine if he can run this offense. don't make him have to be superman. the kid is smart and coachable. we now have a coach capable of doing that with him. the kid has been a winner everywhere he's been.

a draft grade doesn't mean a thing for many players every year.
fast forward to this draft. again maybe not a guy that will set the world on fire in week one but there are some good smart QB's in this draft that are not in the first round. find me a winner that is coachable and add to what we have and this could go a lot smoother.

find a good DC that can adjust to the core of players we have and we will have and just be balanced. we will win.

don't get too excited if the players Tomlin thought were so great get traded or let go. it's probably going to happen. as long as we draft or bring in a different player that makes it actually work. that's all i care about. players come and players go. just because something happened here or there doesn't mean it will always be that way.

my lord look at the two super bowl qb's this year. whoever thought a few years ago that sam darnold would be leading a team to the super bowl?

 

I don't know about "Brock Purdy lucky", cuz that is REALLY lucky... but there is still some level of luck drafting QB outside the first 12 picks. There are enough quality guys that have been taken after that though to feel like we have a reasonable chance to get someone after that.

I think Shanahan's system is just QB friendly. He can take a reasonable QB and make him look good in a quality modern NFL system. McCarthy isn't that. If he upskills the QB it will be through individual development. This has a higher ceiling for said player IMO, but is has a much lower "hit" rate. Time will tell if he is as good as he says he is at developing QB's or not. Its put up or shut up time right now.

 

Well, I was less endorsing the idea of drafting a QB and more showing that Howard shouldn't be considered that much less of a prospect than Fernando Mendoza is.

If we do end up drafting someone like Simpson, I would be fine with it. He seems to have a nice arm, and solid accuracy. His command of the offense pre snap and through his reads is really good. While I agree with his decision to come out due to the weaker QB class, I think you're right on his draft prospects being a lot higher if he went back to school. He had a lot of great tape out there, and despite faltering a bit down the stretch, I think he has a lot of tools you would want from your signal caller at the next level.

 

True, but Tomlin's remarkable, unprecedented degree of consistency became something a joke and what many would even consider to be one of his most biggest failures as a coach. It's no coincidence that the last time the Steelers drafted a franchise QB, it was after a disappointing 6 win season...which was nearly 25 years ago. With the way the NFL is structured today, a team that is constantly mid in season standings will often be in a far more worse situation (at least over the long term) than a team that is occasionally awful, so long as the organization is stable enough. NE perfectly illustrates the immense possible upside to stinking it up for a couple seasons, and they're just the most recent example.

As such, I wouldn't necessarily be disappointed with McCarthy having one his 5 or 6 win seasons – even right out of the gate. Just so long as there's clear evidence that the team is building towards something better, both with hirings and in subsequent drafts, and the losses don't seem like the result of gross incompetence in game planning or players just quitting (as was seemingly the case in recent seasons), it may not be such a bad thing in the long run, a losing season or two could be prove to be hugely beneficial later...assuming they don't squander what they would get out of it, of course.

 

Plenty of other teams have drafted QB's after pick 12 (or whatever a 6 win season gets you). Love, Purdy, Prescott, Jackson, Dart, Hurts, Wilson, Cousins... the list goes on. We have had ample opportunity to get it right at the QB level and have failed to do so.

While I can agree that a single 5 or 6 win season (maybe two) wouldn't be the end of the world for the franchise... I don't think that is why you hire someone like McCarthy. He's not the "rebuild" coach. Which is what makes it so interesting to me. We could have hired a guy that would modernize the team while building through the draft (possibly with two or three top 10 picks in the mix) and try to build a winner moving forward. We opted for McCarthy because we are desperately trying to avoid that 5 or 6 win season at all costs. Its the only reason a team would hire him (and based off of Rooney's comments in his press conference, its exactly where his head is at). He's trying to win a playoff game next year with this hire, not rebuild with a 5 or 6 win season. If McCarthy wins 5 games we likely need to fire him before he can damage the team's future any further.

 

Art looks like a liar no matter how we want to look at it. He wants to win a SB now w/out dealing with the pain of a rebuild which is why he got McCarthy. There's quite a few guys that have developed QBs on the market right now, notably the Kubiak brothers. Going with Howard just signals a wasted year for the highest paid defense in the league. Lets be honest, nothing about this really makes a lot of sense. There's no plan other than winning now with a retread. I expect a looney FA/trade season leading up to the draft that doesn't make their plan any more clear than it is today. I wouldn't be surprised if the QB ends up to be Joe Flacco to be honest. There won't be a true mindset of a reset until this roster bottoms out, and by that time Dan III is taking over a ship thats rather empty. Frankly I highly doubt McCarthy serves the entirety of this contract.

I'm all for finding out what Howard can do. This owner doesn't have the patience for that.
