I’m as worried as most about this hire. Cowher giving his support isn’t convincing me. But I am trying to see the positives he brings, and waiting to find out if he will do the right things (starting with his OC and DC choices).

I’m only arguing against the idea that it is absolutely certain he will fail.

Imagine that you are a KC fan in January 2017. Similar complaints that I’m reading now would also be made about Andy Reid: a lot of regular season success in his 14 years in PHI and 4 years in KC, but only one visit to the Super Bowl (a loss) during those 18 years. And Reid was turning 60.

(A bunch of QB-needy teams let Mahommes slip to KC and the 10th pick. If KC wound up with Trubisky or Watson, they probably don’t see the success of the 2019-24 seasons.)

I certainly don't love this hire but damn, some of you need to step back from the ledge. Maybe let the dude screw up first before bringing out the torch and pitchforks.

Now I’m thinking about those analysts who kept insisting that the Steelers under Tomlin would have a losing record that season, year after year, figuring that they’d eventually be right. (And now that he stepped down, they never will be right.)

So there’s a distinction between being “very” disagreeable and “extremely” disagreeable?

McCarthy in a bubble has a solid coaching resume. It’s not necessarily him as a coach but more what this represents. We had a chance to truly reset and get a young innovative mind and instead went for the safe hire a guy that has been almost as bad as Tomlin in the playoffs lately. Art is delusional and thinks we are in contention until he steps away I have no faith. The proof will be bringing back 43 year old AR and trying to run it back.

Will your opinion change if AR is not brought back?

Not sure what to tell you boss. Take up a new hobby come fall or get real acquainted with edibles cause I'm afraid your stress level might only get worse.

Edibles get my mind spinning even more! I’m willing to give big Mike a chance I just hope we don’t do a washed Vet QB. I want a QB in 2027 if Howard isn’t the answer.

It would help. But I don’t want any washed up Vet like a Kirk Cousins or some BS.

The third link talks about MM having to fix a broken offense, mainly Prescott's INT rate. That season the Dallas Cowboys ended up with the No. 1 scoring offense in the league. Some writers can't help themselves.

We did hire one of the better offensive-minded coaches Career-wise, with the most experience of all the candidates. I think I will at least give him the chance before I speak against the hire.

Many of us fans on here were pounding the table for guys that are still not head coaches. I think that fact proves beyond doubt that 'us fans' don't know nearly as much as we think we do about any of this.

It really doesn't matter who had been hired this time. The same 2-3 posters would be on here claiming how bad the hire was. Time will tell.

Your second point is a good one. Those 'up and coming HCs' everyone was raving about were passed over by multiple teams. Sometimes it's just a case of them not being ready to lead an NFL football team. Or maybe they are good coordinators but would not make good HC? I mean, different skillset needed for each job.

Well, every head coach was once a coach without head coaching experience.

Every great Steelers head coach became a head coach for the first time as the Steelers' head coach.

It's understandable why fans want a new, younger, first-time head coach with that track record.

This is correct. It is understandable. I was only pointing out that since multiple teams also passed on those up and coming guys, it stands to reason that the Steelers made a good choice by also not hiring one of them. Heck, none of us knows, but the team FOs probably do. I think with that in mind, let it play out before we decide it was a bad hire. Seems there are those here that are already ready to blow this up before we even get to TC.

Perhaps Rooney understood how fortunate they have been in their selection process? I mean, the number that have tried and failed in the NFL far exceeds the Steelers unusual success rate. Then again, hanging on too long to a coach is akin to the hardest part of owning stock, i.e. when to sell.

I don't claim to know what the best course of action was. I didn't really want Mike McCarthy, but once they hired him I'm all in.

I've been saying in many posts that we have to give him a chance and judge McCarthy on how things progress. It's silly to say someone is a failure before he has even had the chance to field a team or install an offense and defense. Fans just overreact to this stuff.

I also think that it really isn't fair to judge him until he has a couple seasons as he implements the offensive and defensive systems, and they add the personnel necessary to run those schemes while developing young quarterbacks.

I'm not saying they made a mistake. I think the intention here was clear. Acquire a head coach that they believe gives them the best chance to develop a young quarterback. I believe that has been the reasoning behind the hire.

Once He was hired, I'm 100% behind him, but I can still question things, just like I did with Noll, Cowher, and Tomlin. Doesn't mean I wasn't rooting, and pulling for them.
