Some are speculating that they are bringing him in to get an idea about him as an OC. It’s almost a guarantee that if they hire Shula that he would bring Scheelhaase in as his OC. They might want to make sure they are comfortable with that.[/QUOTE]

The problem I see with this, is if they bring in Scheelhasse in as an OC and he turns things around, he'll be gone in a couple of years. I'd rather roll the dice and make him HC.

It might be too early for Scheelhaase to be a HC this cycle, he's just a passing game coordinator right now we don't know if he's a good play caller or not.

I’d be very happy with bringing in a guy who turns it around and leaves in a few years

I’d be very happy if that happened with both OC and DC

I’d be very happy if it happened over and over

    You are correct.

If everyone around the NFL is looking to poach your coaching staff, you're winning a ton of games and having huge success.

Although he is not my #1 choice, this son of a legendary coach should be among our final three picks. I like two of the OC's a bit better but Shula may fit the Steelers cuture better.

I have become a bit paralyzed as to whom to hire. Some of these former HCs (McDermott now) also seemed to either be good on offense and poor on defense or vice-versa.
I actually liked Stefanski because he was smart enough to higher a GOOD DC. So he was trying to be balanced good.

Some of these DC's we're interviewing, will they hire a "safe" choice. You know, don't risk turnovers, run the ball, kick a lot of field goals? Or will they hire a risk-taking, modern, envelope-pushing young(ish) OC and let them have free reign on the offense and some input on the personnel?

I know, thats the trick right, which DC or OC to hire as HC, that will try to find the most aggressive and best OC and DC that is out there. Too many hires in my lifetime where a coach neglects or purposely nerfs one side of the ball, or in Tomlin's case, both sides of the ball, since he wasn't very good defensive mind (was puported to be) and went no-risk, no-reward on the past three OCs.

Looks like Steelers will be the third or fourth best job out there. Depending on what Rooney is willing to pay and what Rooney demands (run-first, cheap OC/DC, whatever), we might be down lower than that.

Now, that doesn't matter, as long as we get a good hire and sometimes getting the second choice turns out really well.

I am not really on board with McCarthy, and probably not wanting McDermott, since he seemed to fail to hire good DCs just like Tomlin.

The good news is, we're guaranteed something NEW, and so regardless of the hire, I'll look forward to a season of Steelers football for the first time in 6 or 7 years.

I am afraid you maybe right.
I am terrified he will be just like MT afraid to let OC/DC coach.
    Controlling everything. No thanks.

Maybe Flores learned from his mistakes in Miami, and he calls the plays on defense himself.

I think there's a decent possibility they promote Brady from within, or even bring Daboll back, both of whom have a strong history with Allen. Of course, they might want new blood, too. Rex Ryan was saying they should hire Belichick, which, uhh, it's an interesting time around the league.

    Hire McCarthy as HC.

    Hire young OC & DC.

But let them know, this is a great opportunity for you to learn from McCarthy and one day yourself become a HC….maybe here.

I don’t doubt Flores is a great defensive coach, but it sounds like he had contentious relationships with some of his players as a head coach, when you hear what some players in Miami have say.

People want the next coach to hang around here for a long time, but someone like that might burn out quick if he can’t keep everyone together.
