I'm on record stating we will be entering a rebuild phase despite Rooney's best interest which will likely result in 1 or 2 down year.

    Reasons.

1# new coach/ coaches - he won't have a Superbowl contending roster with a young and talented franchise QB and a good defense like Tomlin had.

Qb- an obvious deficit at the leagues most important position. They will likely sign a 'veteran' QB that has been to a couple places. Rudolph is fine as a backup imo. Will Howard is a question mark.

RB - good to ok. Warren and Gainwell are good backs. Gainwell might find better opportunities elsewhere. I think they lack a power runner. It'd be nice to see Kaleb Johnson develop but he was a ghost last year.

WR - an obvious area of weakness. While I like DK, he's a bit overrated for his route running and catching ability. All guys below him are supportive guys imo that can't handle the #2 spot.

TE - I love Washington and Freiermuth. They can clearly cut Jonnu. Maybe the next coach will actually use Freiermuth as a weapon.

OLine - Cook has earned the job at LT IMO. They should try Jones at gaurd and draft a guard also with the first 3 picks. I see Seumalo's time is up. I don't think they should or will pick up Jone's 5th year option

Dline - I expect Heyward to retire. I think Tomlin leaving will help him make a decision. I could be wrong. Either way, I don't think they can ignore the DT position in the draft and/or free agency.

ILB - Not sure about the fate of Queen. I have a feeling he will be cut due to cap. I like Wilson but behind him I have my concerns. ILB would be a need if Queen departs.

OLB - love this crew. Hope they can keep them together for another year. They might try to entertain trading TJ due to cap, but the reality is he'll be here. I think it's important to note TJ had a significant injury and he may be more of an impact player next year. He might forego the procedures that could potentially puncture his lung.

Secondary - This is an obvious need in all areas except Porter. I don't see them retaining Ramsey at his cost. This will be an area of weakness that requires investment and intervention.

I'm the optimistic type. I just don't see all of these things getting fixed for next year.

Despite Rooney's desire, I think they will have no choice but to enter a "rebuilding" period. I'd like to think this would be relatively short; however.

I've read John Madden's "The First Book of Football" as a kid and have over 30 years as general manager playing John Madden football.

Highly qualified.. From the university of Trust Me Bro.

I think Tomlin was extremely good at manufacturing regular season wins. He obsessed over winning the turnover battle (he avoided the middle of the field) and getting splash plays. His teams played hard for 60 minutes and won ugly a lot. As we all know, that is not enough for playoff success. I understand why people think we'll have trouble with our current roster and no Tomlin.

You still believe the WWE is real too don’t ya?

They don’t hold a meeting and say “hey everyone we are tanking!!”

Only coordinators and HC are in on it. They call plays to put their players in losing situations. Which honestly the Steelers coaching staff was already amazing at when apparently trying.

The same responses you always give me when I don’t echo the group think.

You realize I could bump like 100 of these replies to me and I ended up being right?

Maybe I’m not the dumb one

Both Cowher and Tomlin had the same basic philosophy of controlling the clock (physical/running the ball), minimizing mistakes/penalties, not turning the ball over, playing disciplined defense, good kicking. Things opened up a bit with the 3 B's with an attack down field. Basically a more conservative approach.

The recipe works well to win games overall. The problem is, if you get behind you are not built to come back unless of course you have a Ben Roethlisberger that can spread out the defense.

here is a question to ponder... did the offensive and defensive schemes hold the roster back, or did the roster hold the offensive and defensive schemes back?

i tend to think a little of both. but if i absolutely had to chose, i'd say the schemes held the roster back.

think about it. on offense they rarely used the middle of the field, they only played with 1/3 of the available field on offense. the offensive schemes over the years have been weak at best. on defense i think they ran the same scheme so much that it became easy to beat.

i do think that with better offensive and defensive scheming this team would have been much harder to beat than they were this year. so in my eyes i don't see it as a stretch that a new coaching staff with better schemes couldn't produce the same outcome as this year as last. i surely don't see them only winning 5 or 6 games regardless of who the QB is.

The season in question they didn’t make the playoffs. 0 playoffs wins in a decade… Failure or loser culture whatever you want to call it. Masking it with pointless wins that just prolongs being able to fix the real issues at hand.

    :confused1:

Talent and old guys being counted on to turn back the clock held everything back.

Tomlin had OCs attack middle of field when he had better QBs.

Rudolph, Wilson, and Rodgers have all avoided the middle of the field outside of Steelers.

    Just not supported by evidence.

On defense, they made a foolish bet that guys could continue to play man coverage well into the backside of their career. Shockingly they could not.
