What I really want to see next year is some semblance of a plan and steady improvement

Chuck Noll went 1-13 his first season but everyone watching knew he had a plan and something different was happening

I'm just not sure you can say that the Pats had significantly farther to go. Maybe? But Tomlin had a conservative plan - with veteran QBs - for regular season wins but getting blasted in the WC round. Not sure the Pats were following the same blueprint.

When you get rid of the entire coaching staff and its conservative philosophy, AND you get rid of your starting veteran QB AND some other aging vets get older and/or leave, you can drop below 10-7 very quickly before the new coaching staff can make enough difference to right the ship.

As of now, we're missing on offense: A QB, a decent LT and a decent WR corps outside of stone hands Metcalf.

So, I don't agree that this team, with a new coaching staff, is starting out with talent that can/should produce a 10-7 season. Maybe they get lucky and insert some players into the system that can do it. But my point is that it's very reasonable to expect we get worse, before getting better, with all the change that's coming our way.

Good point. When a team gets too old all at the same time, the next thing that happens is they get too young at the same time.

There would be a big difference if we had the same record and result with a young QB. If Will Howard, Trinidad Chambliss or some other young QB would have us go 10-7 then the Steelers would be a team on the rise. Doing it with one year ancient rentals like Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers isn't ascending it's just treading water.

I'm talking about only winning 6-7 games a year that type of losing.

Not surprisingly but it appears you have no idea what a head coach does in the NFL

Maybe you should stick to posting other people’s thoughts you did well with the Will Howard one

I would suspect that the players themselves are fed up with the playoff L streak and criticisms they have taken for so long. I would hope that a change in team leadership will give them some optimism to take into next year and possibly improve their record. Now that is optimism.

Really no comparison. Similar records, one had a HOF QB for most of his career and the other didnt.

True but he was the one who had hired Whiz as OC...Arians was also in the Cowher staff

Building a staff was by far Tomlin's biggest weakness

What did we do with KFP and Trubs? We went to the playoffs that year. 2023? Lost to the Bills in the wildcard round. Were we ascending then?

I do agree that recycling older vet QBs is not a recipe for long term success. At the same time, I disagree that just plugging in a QB because he's fresher and younger and looked good in college last year or year before is, by your term, ascending.

You can bring in the next hot hand college QB every draft and still flounder in mediocre QB play for decades. There is no set plan for franchise QBs. If there were, we wouldn't be having this discussion. We would already have our next one.

As it stands today, we have Mason Rudolph, and Will Howard under contract for the next NFL season. I do think the new coaches will bring in another QB. Draft or FA, I don't know. Maybe both. Is that ascending? Is it sinking? The only thing we truly know is it's not treading water.

Stop projecting your thoughts, and fears onto me.
What I'm trying to say, I said.
Cowher took a 7-9 team , and flipped it to a 11-5 team. What I'm saying is we were not a 5-12 team. Taking a team that has gone 10-7 for 3 years straight without a good Qb should not be a hard task not to suck if the right people are brought in.
Now You can obsess over Tomlin who is not a part of the Steelers on Your own time, but leave me out of it.

Translation----we are not going to gut a crap defense that is way overpaid because noone in league wants to take on their wayyyyy to overpriced contract. No real change this year and we will bring in Flores to make sure offense stays in dark ages. We will fight to stay at 7-9 wins and keep our groundhog day of mediocrity going for one or two more years until bottom finally falls out. Then do a 3 -4 year rebuild then. Pull the off that dam band aid and gut the crap d and start over.

That's correct, I forgot. They did around the 80s.
Either way, we don't play enough of the 3-4 to let it hinder us Either way.
