    I came for the what-if game -

What if a new head coach wins the Super Bowl in his first or second year? Does that mean that they won with Tomlin’s team?

I have no problem with losing if it's part of a bigger plan. Of course no team truly plans on losing, but they know it's a reality sometimes.

I would like to see us inquire about Kirk Cousins. I think he has something left in him if he can stay healthy. A short term deal is probably all that's required for him at this point.
I'd also like for us to look into trading up and drafting a highly touted QB. At least make the calls and see the cost. If they like one of the guys coming out, they should go for it.
Have the rookie sit behind Cousins, at least for half the year. If Cousins struggles, make the switch. If he does well like I think he could, keep him in there and see what happens. Re-evaluate next off season.

I think people are anticipating turnover with players and growing pains from a whole new coaching staff, schemes, etc.

That usually results in 2 steps back before going forward.

Or maybe it'll be like when Cowher came in and they take the league by surprise. But that's not the usual case.

How many of those first time coaches also were either paired with or inherited a top 5 draft pick QB in his 1-3rd year in the league?

That's the part no one talks about.

Ben Johnson was going to improve the Bears no matter what. Ben Johnson was able to improve the Bears to the degree he did because Caleb Williams was already on the roster.
Mike Vrabel was going to improve the Patriots no matter what. Mike Vrabel was able to improve the Patriots to the degree he did because Drake Maye was already on the roster.
Liam Coen was going to improve the Jaguars no matter what. Liam Coen was able to improve the Jaguars to the degree he did because Trevor Lawrence was already on the roster.

Unless you think I am cherry picking...take a look at Kyle Shanahan. Started out 6-10 and 4-12 because he had Jimmy G who did not elevate those around him. The Niners had to build around to elevate Jimmy G.

The 49ers were 5-0 with Jimmy G in 2017 and he tore his ACL after week 3 in 2018.It was not a good roster too(they were 2-14 in 2016 before Shanahan took over) but Shanahan was still winning game when he had a average QB in those years

I agree that 12-5 for the steelers in 2026 is too much for now....Work need to be done!

Ask a Jets or Raiders fan about all of the losing you don't know when it will end. Cousins would be along the lines of them signing Wilson or Rodgers, sign Mac Jones or Willis as a bridge QB on a short term deal.

There is just too many questions about who will be QB next year to have any idea how the team will do. Right now we don't have a starting QB on our roster and there aren't many good options in free agency. Maybe Kirk Cousins, Gardner Minshew or Malik Willis will keep the team competitive but unlikely. Maybe a rookie like Ty Simpson or Trinidad Chambliss can be the answer but again that isn't real promising. We also have to greatly improve the WR room and hopefully that can be done in the draft. And what if the team MVP Gainwell gets a big offer from another team and leaves? That leaves Warren and Kaleb Johnson as the returning backs and then we have to hopefully get a good RB in the draft. Right now there is too many questions surrounding the team's roster and the new coach is going to have his work cut out for him.

When you heard people saying FIRE TOMLIN---Does that sound like people are content with our team--I don't think so---anyone crying about Tomlin leaving or happy about non-losing seasons --just doesn't get it..

I am right with you STD, all this doom and gloom is BS.
The Steelers have a good roster and with a good draft and hopefully a good coaching staff, we will continue to be competitive and Hopefully find our Franchise QB and win Superbowls.

I agree with this. I am glad to have regime change. I don't necessarily believe we have to go 3 and 14 before we get better. But,,,,they must pick the right coach and staff and they must nail this draft. The new staff also has to get these 2 and 3 year players to excel. That's asking a lot. It can be done but it's a long shot.

Because we're likely going to rebuild...even though Rooney "doesn't like that word" or whatever.

The defense is built on guys that are mostly old. And they'll all be a year older.

The offense doesn't have any real play makers. And the QBs we currently have under contract for next year are Mason and Howard.

And while many dislike Tomlin, they system he was using probably gave teams without much talent +1 or +2 wins a year (and maybe clawed back wins from stronger rosters).

We've probably over performed reasonable expectations for the past few years. And while that got us more playoff games, they weren't competitive games (because we weren't good teams).

I don't want us to sell off every piece of the team that has value to whatever draft capital we can get. But I do hope that Rooney gives the new coach the freedom to focus more on the medium term than the next game on the schedule.

We need to get younger on both sides of the ball.

And we desperately need to draft well IMO.
