hmm I too was just assuming things would get worse before they got better with as many wholesale changes oh the horizon. i would think its only fair to also give a pass. but if all the players stay the same then like Rooney said, not really rebuilding but being able to compete day 1.

and I much prefer competing day 1, but impossible to say when we don't even have a head coach or what they plan to do.

I mostly agree with all of this. But we're lacking at QB, LT, WR and the defense still hasn't figured out how to stop the run nor 3rd-and-long.

I won't be remotely surprised if we have a down year or two, if we start playing more rookies and a new offensive coordinator is finding his way.

I agree with you this is a salary cap league and there is no reason we can’t be competitive within 1/2 years. Obviously we have no QB right now which is a major problem unless Will Howard is a hidden gem. We also have an aging expensive underperforming D. Still with some tweaks those things can be fixed quickly.

Because you don't hate Tomlin/Rooney enough. Remember the narrative that Tomlin only won because of Cowher's players? Now it'll be, the new guy only LOST because of Tomlin's players.

Flawed way of thinking, it's the kind of thinking that's led to going 0-7 in wild card games and having to plug in endless band aid QB's.

"We were 10-7 lat year, if we just add x, y and z..."

Never works though, we just add x, y and z again and get blown out in the WC game, and back to thinking

"If we just add x, y and z..."

It's the road to nowehere, we've been on for years, like Dallas, endless reloads, never rebuilding...

Even with great coaches everything just gets stale after so many years. Folks in my age range will remember 1983-1991. Other than 1984 it was kind of like watching paint dry.

Flanders Rooney has clearly learned nothing, anyone also wanting an offensive mind is going to be disapointed.

Because people on the outside look at our terrible roster without acknowledging that’s because of Tomlin.

Yes, Tomlin was an elite motivator of men. He could take a below average roster and squeak out 9 wins. I believe Rooney said the quiet part out loud when he said he was ready to run it back with Tomlin because he always had us in “contention” Yet, no playoff wins in a decade. Contention for what? I honestly believe we haven’t been “allowed” to win a SB for a long time. Rooneys believe in parity for the health of the league. Tomlin was perfect… We were never the laughing stock of the league like the Browns. But also, never a legit contender. 2-3 times a year you will get some false hope and go I think they can finally do it! Then get letdown. Just a roll coaster of up/down and always land somewhere in the middle which kept the brand relevant.

It will be interesting to see what happens next…

You just saw your team lose its 7th consecutive playoff game this by the largest margin yet, haven’t won a playoff game in 9 years and you want to RUN IT BACK??? I feel like I’m on crazy pills. I think he also said something about winning regular season games and being in contention in the end is what really counts. No Art we haven’t actually been in contention for over a decade do you watch the fcking games???

12-5: You read it here first!

But seriously, it's not as dire as some might believe. Here's the skinny:

(only problem I have is that first year head coaches typically go to bad teams so improving on 'bad' shouldn't be all that hard. A coach going to a playoff team might be different)

    First-Year Performance Metrics

The challenge of first-year NFL head coaches reveals a nuanced landscape of performance and potential.

When you look at the data, rookie coaches typically improve their team's win total by an average of 2.0 wins, with 26 out of 40 coaches leading teams to better records.

Your chances of success are even higher if your team previously scored less than 18 points per game, where improvements average 5.3 wins.

Notably, first-year head coaches are 41.7% more likely to make the playoffs compared to experienced coaches with new teams.

The point differential also plays an essential role, with teams outscored by 7.5 PPG showing remarkable resilience, consistently improving in their inaugural season under new leadership.

Defensive strategy can significantly influence a rookie head coach's first-year performance and team turnaround.

    Historical Coaching Trends

Throughout NFL history, coaching trends have revealed fascinating patterns of success, longevity, and organizational decision-making. Veterans who struggle, winning three or fewer games, face a 75% likelihood of termination, while first-year coaches receive more organizational patience.

You'll notice that continuous improvement defines successful coaching trajectories, with win rates progressively increasing from 31.39% to 50.86% over three seasons.

The landscape increasingly favors younger, innovative coaches, with the average hire being 46.5 years old and bringing 19.5 years of diverse organizational experience.

Remarkably, 68% of recent head coach hires were first-time NFL head coaches, signaling a shift towards fresh perspectives and dynamic leadership strategies. This trend suggests organizations value potential and adaptability over traditional coaching pedigrees.

Rooney has no fire or passion whatsoever, he is a hollow man.

People can mock Jerry Jones but you know he's all-in to win, however misguided, Art wants to "contend" every year...

    Not even the same thing.

    Define competitive.

Team can go 5-12 but be every game and biggest loss margin was 7 or fewer points. That is a competitive team.

There are definitely some teams for which we can say they will not be good for awhile. They just do not have leadership that can get it done.
That is definitely neither acceptable nor a goal, but it could happen. Rams went through a few years of pain when they drafted Goff, Cowboys under Jimmy. It can happen, it is certainly not the goal and it does not need to happen.

Going 0-7 in WC games whilst getting blown out in all 7 isn't competitive IMO, not even close.
