I do wonder if Malik is the plan for next year.

Not a whole lot of options.

Howard, a question mark on the bench. I believe in him but who knows, not a lot of success stories picked that late in the draft.

In free agency the two most attractive are Willis and Mac Jones.

Theres always the possibility of a trade I guess. Burrow? Hard to see Cincy trading him to a division rival and the haul would be steep.

Minter would be a fine choice and fits the Steelers mold.

Tomlin left the cupboard pretty bare here. An overpaid and aged defense, no QB whatsoever and one of the worst receiving corps in the league even if we had a QB. This isn't the best situation for a new coach to come into.

I disagree a little. Yes the current roster today isn’t good but the new HC will have 5 picks in the first four rounds of this years draft along with significant cap space over the next three years, as well as scope to create more by releasing veteran players and restructuring others.

The new HC will be able to build a team in their image and I think the fan base will be willing to be somewhat patient, understanding that there is no QB on the roster and that some team building is required.

They’ve also added some good young talent in recent drafts, JPJ, Herbig, Frazier, Harmon, Fautanu (Monday night notwithstanding).

This is a huge opportunity and the best job out there apart from the Ravens who will be expected to win immediately because they have Lamar.

Should be 7 picks (1,2,3,3,3,4,4). And $ to spend. There are roster problems but the team is fixable.

    Sorry you’re correct, better again.

I’ll bet there are candidates looking at that and thinking they would have the tools to reshape this team very quickly

With 12 draft picks and a decent amount of cap space it won't take much to fix the WR corps.

The Steelers aren't lacking in talent, but they have a lot of work to do, since they've been an old team for the last few years, so they need more young talent. Receiver and especially quarterback are a major problem. I don't expect it to be fixed in one season, but if they have two or three very good draft picks with a very good young quarterback in that, things could change quickly.

But the situation was much better in 2007 and even 1992, so we'll have to be patient a little. I just hope Khan and Rooney don't think the Steelers are two or three players away from competing; it's going to be a disaster if they do.

If I am a coaching candidate here's my top questions to Rooney:
    1. What is my staff budget?
    2. What is my role in the draft process and how are disputes decided?
    3. What are ownership's timeline expectations for putting together a winning roster?

    My votes for our coaches:

HC: Brian Flores or Eric Bienemi
    OC: cliff Kingsbury
    DC: Jesse Minter

    Beat me to it.

There’s big holes at WR and DB. But the cupboard being bare is a bit much.

I posted that it’s potentially not a great job. And that’s not because of the roster it’s because of the situation and if the owner has specific expectations about competing.

I’ve been watching the Steelers since the end of the Noll era. Two coaching changes. Both times the team didn’t talk about rebuilding. It talked about competing. Right away. If they keep doing that, it’s going to be a hard row to hoe.

While I'd prefer offensive coach I kind of like this if they go defensive:

    HC: Shula
    OC: Scheelhaase
    DC: Minter

    Big youth movement!

Minter isn't going to make a lateral move to another DC job; he will likely get a HC job.

Agree. All three are potential HC candidates. They won't go the coordinator route until all the spots are filled.

The biggest difference between now vs 1992 or 2007,the roster was much better in 1992 and 2007...So I hope the steelers know that too!

GB deal with Matt LeFleur does not have to be done until the Fall of 2026. He is under contract through 2026 and will not sit out.

It doesn't necessarily have to take that long or be that hard if they get a lot of things right.

Of course, they need to find a quarterback. Once they do that, they can then collectively decide how they are going to build the roster and also have a coach in place that is on board with the youth movement. That means that the team is going to get much younger and many young players will be getting significant playing time. That approach would mean less veteran players signed for prominent starting positions, and would allow for quicker development and easier and quicker player evaluations.

They can decide to purge the roster of some of the star veteran players and acquire draft picks which will also save the team money and give them the opportunity to draft more quality players with a chance to play immediately.

There will be new systems and schemes in place. Hopefully these are better and more innovative schemes that elevate the players within the system. Fans keep talking about how the roster needs to get so much better. Maybe the systems the players are operating in just need to get much better to elevate the entire team.

If they can find a quality QB and hit on a handful of players, this team is going to get better pretty quickly. They will most likely take a step back to start, but if they get things right there is nothing stopping them from becoming formidable quickly. There is already a young base here, and they are only going to add more young talent.

The other thing that I think some fans are missing is the possibility that the team is able to draft or sign a free agent quarterback that actually works out. Imagine finding a quarterback that can produce similar passing ability to 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers but is also athletic enough to escape from pressure to create additional plays. A quarterback that is mobile enough to pick up some first downs with his legs. A quarterback that can hurt defenses enough with his arm and his athleticism that teams alter the way they pass rush or the coverages they play based on down and distance.

If Rodgers was a little more mobile, this offense would have been much better this season. It makes a huge difference, and I believe that the offense can become more explosive if they can find a QB that is a competent passer that can also move well.

There are no guarantees, and if it was easy everyone would do it. However, I know that it can be done if they take the right steps and bring in the right people.

I can't wait to see where things go from here.
