If you go Defensive Head Coach, could you bring in Larry Foote as DC? I noticed he received a couple of interviews last year for DC.

You dont need an offensive minded Head Coach if you have a good offensive coordinator. So going Defensive Head Coach shld not be an issue.
And I would consider Larry Foote, cause there will be a job opening it looks like

It’s someone I’ve mentioned for the HC job, but if he’s going to be an OC then give me Scheelhaase from LA Rams. I don’t think he will be a coordinator long if he has any level of success… but a McVey guy would be awesome. Seems to be targeted for his strong personality and his football acumen. Lots of guys in the league making hay that were failed QB’s.

Umm, no? Both guys started their careers as college assistants. Carrolls first HC job was in the NFL, but Harbaugh’s was in college.

Stefanski has an offensive, not defensive, background. If there’s ever been a coach who has gone 8-26 over 2 seasons that I would consider, it’s him because the environment there is such a dumpster fire. He has some success in that disaster.

But he said he “thought it over”

    How can you argue that

No thanks. The moment your offensive coordinator becomes good, another team will snatch them for their head coach.

I would rather the head coach be an offensive guru, to keep a consistent offensive system on the team for a young quarterback. Offensive-minded coaches tend to have better offensive lines.

You can find a D Coordinator like Vic Fangio, a former head coach or longtime DC.

That's a fair point. I will say, that with the transfer portal and NIL, the college game is waaaaaaay more NFL-like than it used to be. Marcus Freeman has some very Tomlin-esc qualities.

Minnesota wants him to stay and the Steelers had no problem offering him a job while he was suing the league before.

And neither Harbaugh nor Carroll were guys who just came straight from college to the NFL without prior NFL coaching experience.

I think that suit is settled and will be a nonfactor in him getting a HC job.

I think Stefanski had the least amount of control over a team as you can have in the nfl. That was one of the problems. No way he was dumb enough to draft two rookie QB's, trade for Pickett and then deal Pickett and Flacco to roll with the rookies. That reeks of GM and Owner making moves without consulting the coach.

Ok who is this offensive guru head coach candidate you have in mind? Flores has already been a head coach in the league and has already worked in the Steelers organization,

I have no idea. That is Khan's job. Klint Kubiak from Seattle is doing good work.

Stefanski won coach of the year twice, and the fact that the moronic Browns organization fired him raised his profile in my eyes.

I have no problem with your thought process but he would have to blow the doors off in his interview. Im not sure Dan is as familiar with him as he could be. It was really Tomlin who went to bat for him and Dan said ok if Mike was sure. It went as well as anything could go for everyone just not sure those two spent a lot of time together to get to know each other.

And then there’s Watson… I can’t judge Stefanski harshly for losing in the Factory of Sadness.

Yeah, I guess... Technically that is true. Jim Harbaugh coached 16 years before getting the Niners job and 14 of those were college jobs. He was a QB coach for 2 years in the early 2000's for the Raiders. It's hard to say he was an "NFL" guy and not a "college" guy... I'm not saying there are a ton of college guys that have worked out, but to try to say Jim Harbaugh isn't one of the list that did is not the case. Pete Carroll spent the first 10 years of his career coaching in the FBS college ranks (up to coordinator) before becoming a DB coach in the NFL. Though, his first HC job was the Jets and only was a college HC after one year with the Jets and three with the Pats. I can concede that he was an NFL guy, though, he had so much success in college (after not having a massive amount in the NFL) and likely was known as a "college" guy because of that. He obviously had a ton of success in the NFL when he came back.

TBH winning COTY twice in that hellscape is remarkable... Though that award generally goes to the guy who took a bad team the year before and won a lot more games than people thought (Or lose your QB for the year and make it far with a backup). Easy to have low expectations in Cleveland.

Stefanski would be a good hire IMO. I'd prefer others, but I wouldn't be disappointed with that outcome.
