My guess is that they thought Johnson had a chance to be the early down back by the end of the year and that Warren could be the passing down back (he's really good at pass pro and pushed Najee out of this role even though he was good at it too).

I think they only picked up Gainwell on the cheap as insurance in case someone got hurt or Johnson didn't work out.

I think they were surprised at how good Gainwell was for us.

But maybe I just think this because I was massively surprised by Gainwell this year.

No, I thought they may have been thinking this as well going in. But it would've been tough sledding for KJ - defenses would've been pinning their ears back to stop the run whenever he was in there.

Gainwell has definitely been a pleasant surprise, and the dual-threat ability he and Warren both have helps disguise intentions.
