The owners of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette announced Wednesday that the newspaper will cease publication Sunday, May 3.

Over the past 20 years, Block Communications Inc. has lost more than $350 million in cash operating the newspaper. Despite those efforts, the company said that the realities facing local journalism make “continued cash losses at this scale no longer sustainable.”

It`s something how change in technology messes with jobs.

When I was a boy, for my first job I had a paper route with a small hometown newspaper. Probably not many of those traditional home deliveries going on anymore.

My third job was meter reader. Technology all but eliminated that one too.

I can't remember the last time I saw someone with a newspaper.

Right now, my most recent memories of the Post-Gazette is behind their Paywall. :(

I read the paper this morning. I, too, had a paper route as a first job. I'm not sure when "they" decided kids couldn't do it anymore. I was a subscriber here for decades and the deliveries kept getting more and more unreliable. Now, I buy one at 7-11 3 or 4 times a week. The Union-Tribune makes noise now and then about ceasing their print versions. They'd love for everyone to be reading an e-paper, it would cut way back on their overhead. I read the paper in a particular order and I don't like having to scroll back and forth on my laptop.

It was a good 183 year run but technology killed the Post Gazette. Around 200 employees there have lost their jobs. My dad was a big fan of the Pittsburgh Press, I remember he would give me a quarter to walk to the local grocery store every Sunday and get the Press. The store was closed on Sundays but the newspapers were stacked on their porch and they had a wooden box to drop your quarter in. It was the honor system of dropping in your 25 cents and only taking one paper and as far as I know I never heard of anyone not paying or taking more than one newspaper.

I hope all the Steelers writers land on their feet and can continue to cover the team.

My 1st job was walking rice fields , with a role of visqueen, and a shovel with holes drilled into it.
I don't know if they have technology yet to end that.

This is a bummer. I grew up to guys like Ed Bouchette and Gene Collier writing Steelers stuff growing up and Smizik writing bout the Pirates and such. I used to go to the Clairton Uni-Mart and grabbed a coffee and breakfast burritos and read the sports sections of the McKeesport Daily News and Post Gazette.

I used to read the newspaper daily and do the crossword puzzles and scrambles during the evening. That was not very long ago. Then they doubled the price, tripled the price and quadrupled the price all the while reducing the content by the same amount. I was paying four times the amount and while receiving 1/4 the product. Kind of like everything else the days. I quit wasting my time and money about 15 years ago and never looked back. Call me a boomer but times were better back then. Now, a good portion of people can’t even read or write. I guess they got chat GPT to make them seem intelligent. RIP Newspapers. Y’all been dead for a long time now.

My very first job. Paperboy in the Burgh. Kind of sad but I have not read the paper version for 50 years.

We get the Philly papers which seem to be still going strong. $5.00 for the Sunday Philly Inquirer.

Let's be honest, all this technology has a ton of advantages. My favorite is the medical side of it. Cooper health care is so damn easy when you have to go to a Doctor. It is insane how far our species has advanced in the last 50 years. We have had it better then all who came before us.

That said, I am a true believer all this technology is going to bite our species in the ass.

Maybe one of the better sports writers can go to the Tribune Review and they can get rid of Mark Madden

This is a bummer. Pittsburgh will have no print newspapers. I read where about two local newspapers are going out of business every week lately.

I delivered the Press for years as a kid and occasionally would pick up someone's P-G route for a while. End of an era.

It wasn't just technology. It was the greed and incompetence of the paper's owners. They held a public trust and failed.

Hell, I'd rather them hand that job to you or half the people on this site rather than keep publishing anything Madden writes.

The shovel has holes so the water will wash through, and the visqueen is for after cutting channels in certain spots to allow draining, or to shore up spots. You want an even water level throughout. When You are doing thousands of acres of rice , walking them is the only way to keep them as equal as possible.
I guess people could use drones now, but then you would still have to go out , and fix the spots.
