I don't think this kid is going to the practice squad. I don't see them risking losing him. Bob Labroila said when he catches the football it sounds like a football hitting a pillow his hands are so soft. He also has no fear of going over the middle and his size and speed combo can make for some real mismatches. Now we have to see what he does on specials but if he does well I could see the Steelers being forced to keep 6 wrs or cut one of the vets. Throw his college numbers out since he played most of his career at run oriented Penn State which tells me he should be a pretty good run blocker as well. In one year at OU he had really good numbers. I just get the feeling this kid is going to shine all preseason long. He had a catch and run for a td in practice today.

I saw that article. I would love it if he shows enough to drop Plax or Cotchery.

I hope this turns out to be true also but I also remember being really excited for Limas Sweed and we know how THAT turned out. I always try to take all these great stories coming out of camp with a grain of salt. But obviously I hope he turns out to be the next Hines Ward.

Having extensive backround in the Big 12, Sweed doesn't come close to comparing with J Brown. I cringed when the Steelers drafted Sweed and his hands of stone. During his one year at OU, he was polished with great hands and very deceptive speed. He doesn't have blazing speed but will go over the middle and is fearless. He is better against zone and cover two, where he has problems, at times getting separation in man to man with more aggressive CB's. I think it's closer to 60/40 he makes the 53. I believe he has more value as a PR/WR as a rookie than keeping old man Plax for one more year.

Maybe it is nostalgia, but with our young receiving corps, I'd rather have Plax over Cotchery. To this point in Cotchery's career, we've seen what he is capable of, which isn't a whole lot. He hasn't had more playing time, because he hasn't earned it/ deserved it over the other WR's on the roster. I'm looking forward to Plax being a redzone / endzone threat. Catch a handful of touchdowns and he'll be worth keeping around. Time for AB to be a #1, let Sanders go out and earn a big pay day, either here or elsewhere. Let Wheaton develop as we hope. Given that, if Brown is worth having, I would rather have him and Plax versus him and Cotchery.

I don't think any of the young talent should go in place of three possible one year guys. (plax, sanders, cotchery) as I've said before, i'd much rather keep cotchery over plax, because we could get 2-3 years out of him.

he doesn't have a lot of miles on him considering his playing time. cotchery has played well for us except for one play. personally i'd like to keep both this year and brown. we are 1 injury away from cotchery starting for us.

i'm watching jd woods too. hopefully a PS stash.

Well the good news is that we don't have nearly as much invested in Brown, a late round pick, as we had in Sweed, a 2nd round draft pick. If Brown develops into something special that will make up for the huge disappointment in Sweed.

Sweed had problems catching the ball from mini camp never was anything like this said about sweed. I honestly think colbert & co hit again on a late round wr named Brown.

    :this!:

And I like what I've read about Brown's hands so far in camp, because I believe he had some drop problems in college.

the best thing I like besides his hands is, he's a good blocker and so is woods. something this offense was in need of to help the run game. our wr's are being counted on to block better this year. it's been talked about in camp so far. these two were pretty good at it in college a big plus.

Yeah and just to be clear I'm not COMPARING them as far as players. I'm just saying that when I hear these stories coming out of camp I always hope they don't turn out to be another Sweed. Sweed is sorta just code speak to me for guys that didn't turn out to be what we (or maybe just I) thought they would be. Wasn't there stories about how Sweed was wowing people at camp as well?

I'm all for a fair/equal camp and preseason battle between Plax, Cotchery and J.Brown.

So, here's to an equal number of recieving reps, blocking opertunties in the run game, chances at punt returns/contributing on special teams, limited breathers/holdouts, etc. for each. May the best 2 win a spot on the final 53.

BFT you got it man. There was alot of positive talk about Sweed as well and look how that turned out. I agree that he was a bust and in fact predicted he would not work out as a Steeler. I guess instead of getting into long conversations about potential busts we could save alot of typing by characterizing a player that is a bust as a Sweed

    What say you?

    Thats a Sweed lol

Yep that was exactly what I was saying! I think of any player that gets hyped and then tanks as a "Sweed". Bell is getting some good press right now too so we have to also hope that he isn't a "Sweed" as well. LOL.

I don't remember Sweed getting a bunch of good press. I remember reading he was having a problem catching the ball in camp.

But you've got to use the word as a verb and not a noun. So, instead of saying you "hope that he isn't a 'Sweed'" you've got to say you "hope he doesn't 'Sweed'"

I just read j.brown and moye are distancing themselves from the other young wr's. not counting wheaton, he's been running with the first unit in the slot. that's a 6-3 and a 6-5 guy as well as a punt returner.

I'm liking this. I didn't think there was any way he'd make the team out of camp, now I'm not so sure.

Humm, I wonder what Plax would fetch in a trade, especially now that he likes to block again?

I doubt he would fetch anything considering he was available to be had last season and nobody other than the Steelers bit. If the reports on Brown and Hawthorn are true either him or Cotchery is probably going to be cut before the regular season starts.

he may mean moye, but I get the jist of what glens saying and was thinking the same thing. I hope they don't cut cotchery and keep plax just to keep a vet. you don't build a team for just one year. it's very important that they keep this young talent and get their feet wet for next year.

they may very well have to keep 6 wr's. if sanders or brown went down, I don't want plax having to be a starter. cotchery would be much better at it and know this offense better.

although I also read that they had bell splitting out in 5 wide sets. what do they have up they're sleeves? very fun camp/preseason we are instore for, i'd say.
