    Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers
Record with team: 200-125-2 (including playoffs), 19th season

Why he might get fired: A few weeks ago, fans were chanting “Fire Tomlin” during a blowout loss to the Bills. Then the Steelers took control over the AFC North and all was forgotten. But a loss to the 4-12 Browns, when Pittsburgh had a shot to clinch the division, forced a winner-take-all game against the Ravens in Week 18. Would a loss in that game, and no playoff berth, restart the talk about the Steelers and Tomlin both needing fresh starts?

Why he might be safe: Tomlin is a very good coach and to the chagrin of many Steelers fans, has had unending support from ownership. The Steelers value continuity, so they wouldn’t make a rash decision on Tomlin’s future. And it seems even more unlikely they’d make a move if the Steelers win the AFC North in the season finale.

    HOT SEAT RANKING:
    https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nf...oser-leave-town/ar-AA1ThZRU?ocid=BingNewsSerp

8a/8b. Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers; John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens (PR: both unranked)
Their teams will battle for the AFC North title and a playoff berth Sunday night. Will the loser be out of a job? It is inconceivable that either will be fired, but it’s not inconceivable that either will choose, or mutually agree, to move on. Tomlin feels more likely to opt out after 19 seasons (and not a single one with a losing record), especially considering the mounting frustrations in Pittsburgh over the fact that he hasn’t won a playoff game since 2016.

Harbaugh’s had more recent playoff success, with wins in each of the past two postseasons, and the Ravens have double-digit wins in six of the past eight seasons. But this has been a particularly difficult one, and there's reportedly a rift brewing between him and quarterback Lamar Jackson. No one doubts they’ll both be allowed to choose their own terms and continue if they want. But no one would be surprised if the loser decides that enough is finally enough.

Tomlin could lose a 100-0 on SNF and he still will not be shown the door. All will be forgotten on draft day while fans wave Terrible Towels and scream Here we go Steelers Here we go! Training camp will come and thousands will still show up in Latrobe then home opener, people will start tailgating at 8 am anticipating the 2026 season. His seat hasn’t been hot nor even luke warm during his entire tenure. He won’t be extended but he sure won’t be fired. If he goes, it will be on his own terms and 16 million dollars a year says he will stick around til 2027. JMHO.

I don’t mind keeping Tomlin if the Steelers would hire smart OC and DC and tell Tomlin to keep his nose out.

Notice the results when we used the MOF?

Question: is it me or is the defense playing as good or better without Watt?

Tomlin is 100% safe no matter what happens Sunday. The discussion of Harbaugh, and a growing rift between him and Jackson, is interesting. Is there a coach who has achieved less with more over that past several years? In my view the Ravens have consistently had a Top 2 or 3 roster every single season since 2019 and have nearly nothing to show for it.

I don't miss Watt but a few years back him and BOZ were reason we won 9-10 games.

I said he was done for season as soon as he had that terrible problem. I was told no way. Looks like I was right and I'll take it a step further, TJ Watt won't play again.

It wasn't me even though I do wear my red hat wherever I go. But yeah can you imagine getting that upset over a ballgame that you would go find out where a coach or player live and harass them. 30 days in the slammer should cure that kind of nonsense.

It is hard to predict how the fans and Art Rooney II will take a devastating loss on home turf for a do or die game. The aftermath of the game will rock to the foundation of this board.

Will they be disappointed in how the season played out? Angry at Tomlin? Calling for his job ? What.

I will tell you this, the one thing that owners fear is when product anger turns into apathy. I think we have hit that point.

The Steelers are quickly becoming irrelevant in the NFL. Like the NY Jets. We will very likey be 9 years and counting without a playoff win.

If you have to tell a HC to keep his nose out of anything, he's not really the head coach but a figure head. JMO

Most in sports media are saying Harbaugh's seat is hotter than Tomlin's. I disagree. Harbaugh has won a Super Bowl more recently with mostly his own players... Lewis, Suggs and Reed were Billick's and Marchibroda's players. Harbaugh successfully developed Lamar Jackson into an MVP caliber QB. Harbaugh > Tomlin. Yes, Harbaugh is a moron for not running the wheels off of Derrick Henry in playoff games vs Chiefs and Bills.... but other than that, he's a superior coach to Tomlin.

Are we playing better defense without TJ?

Historically (pre-2025), the Steelers were a dismal 1-10 in regular-season games Watt missed, with the defense allowing significantly more points (around 26+ PPG without him vs. 20 PPG with him in career splits).Watt remains the linchpin of the defense—his pressure draws double-teams, forces hurried throws, and creates opportunities for others (e.g., sacks, turnovers, run stops). Watt makes big plays that help win games.

Judge TJ when he is healthy. He is no longer a Defensive MVP type, but he remains a good PLAYER who was the most double teamed player or the second most per snap in the NFL.

I think the opponents we have played for the last three games are non-playoff teams, and two of the three teams are not good on offense. The other one was and they scored enough points to win. This may be the reason why the defense has appeared to have played better lately.

That's ridiculous. It's one thing to want the Steelers to move on from Tomlin. It's a whole other thing to harras the man at his house. People forget that at the end of the day players and coaches are just regular people with families. I agree. Whomever this is should have at the very least spent the night in jail.

    ...

Why he might be safe: His employer has the last name "Rooney". And the mission statement of the team is to not play meaningless regular season games.

Yinz are missing the point. More than any other season, the national media is at least acknowledging the idea that Tomlin's time is near an end. This hasn't happened up to this season, at least not seriously. We are now seeing in print that 'no losing seasons' only has so much currency.

I am most interested in how the extension/no extension season plays out. I am sure neither the team nor Tomlin want a lame-duck coach.

I think there is a good chance they let him go... draft next year is in Pitt, they have a lot of picks, they might be drafting their QB of the future...

If there was ever a time for a clean break this is it. You would want your new coach to be able to pick his QB.
