Ike, Allen, and gay(unfortunately) are locks. So that leaves Brown, Victorian, Hawthorne, DVD, and green fighting for two may e three spots. Brown has an inside track due to his special teams play but looked lost out there when called upon. Victorian got better but still a question mark. DVD has huge potential and was Tomlins guy before the raiders drafted him and he has starting experience. I think as long as Hawthorne stays healthy he is in for sure. Green I don't know much about other then he is fast. I'm going with Hawthorne and DVD and brown if they keep six. DVD has woodson to work with again and we all know what a full off season of the lake effect can do. Is Victorian still PS eligible if so I have him and Green going there.

Brown and Hawthorne make it. DVD next in line. Just a guess. I really don't know.

Victorian is still PS-eligible, I think?

I've not seen DVD play, though the coaches seem high on him. But I imagine Hawthorne will be ahead of him (if his injury clears up... though not sure what the word is on that).

I actually don't have a problem with Gay as a nickleback. He's a good blitzer from that position, and his coverage is only horifically exposed when he's put one on one on the outside. (On the inside it still isn't great, but with LB/S support he hopefully won't be a blight on the secondary).

    Fixed that for you.

I'm being harsh - I've said before that Victorian's learning curve was impressive last year. I doubt he'll be up to 3rd or 4th string yet, but still wouldn't mind keeping him around.

If Brown wasn't a special teams ace I would say no way he is on this team but hey we found our new Anthony Madison lol.

People have said stuff like this which I don't get. I've never seen a CB get targeted and repeatedly beat like he did in the Dallas game. Was he thrown in there before he was ready? Absolutely.

He can improve, sure... but let's not act like he makes it just because he's started for us. He looked worse in the secondary than our Chad Scott/Dewayne Washington days.

Haha. Yeah he's got potential, but his ceiling isn't very high IMO.

    ike,allen,gay,hawthorne,DVD. bunch O' speed.

never been impressed with brown and he's hurt a lot, without playing.

DVD is a great gunner for our new ST's coach. DVD has some starts under his belt.

hawthorne is carnell's first new toy, with a ton of potential. could be ike's eventual replacement.

JV goes to the PS and learns more.

Demarcus Van Dyke never started for us. He started 3 or 4 games in 2 seasons with Raiders and that's it. His only playing time with us was on ST and that came to an end after his string of 5 penalties. He was used solely on ST. No starts, no defensive snaps...

    /edit

He got a second chance to play ST in week 15 after Taylor and Allen went down with injuries. He separated his shoulder on the first punt of the game and was done for the remainder of the season.

never said he started for us. he started 4 games in Oakland with 13 tackles,4 passes defended and an interception. that's still NFL starts. he's also a sub 4.3 guy and is pretty good as a gunner. with the new ST's coach, the holding can be fixed. he was also not alone on our ST's at doing that last year. brown has shown me little.

The learning curve was between the two games he was out there. The first game was horrific. The second game was much better. That was, for me, what made him worth keeping around at least as far as camp. Not a HOF performance, obviously.

On the basis of the Dallas game alone, there's no way I'd keep him about. And as TTF says, the ceiling is never going to be high with him.

I'm afraid I've got bad news for ya: I'm pretty sure when Gay enters the game as the #3, he will play outside and Allen will slide to the slot. The good news is that it will help when we play teams with good tight ends or slot receivers. The bad news is that if the offense's best weapons are on the outside, Gay will be overmatched.

Since all top 3 CBs of ours can play inside and outside, I'd rather we just match them up by talent and let them lineup wherever they land. Let Ike take the top receiver, Allen #2, Gay #3.

I disagree with you. You are right about Allen moving inside and Gay outside in the nickel but it is the best way to go. Allen is a better cover guy for sure and slot receivers are becoming the "new" weapon in todays NFL offenses,, ( see Giants Cruz ) plus he does match up better with that "other TE" that the LB isn't covering. Let's remember Gay has outside coverage experience here and with the cardinals and he had more int's than our starting CBs last year. He's also a great tackler and that fits LeBeau's system in keeping the receiver in front of you, never getting beat. He also allowed fewer TDs than our Starting CBs.

Gay isn't gonna be a probowler but he will be a solid # 3 CB.

:this!: Gay did much better his last season here under Lakes tutelage and I have already seen where they have said they plan on using Allen in the slot.

You got it! Which was the main reason I was concerned about the Denver game. Clark is the DB's QB on the field and they need him out there. This secondary looks lost at times when he's out. (Denver games)

I think with Thomas and Clarks age the writing is kind of on the wall. This is the last year of Clarks contract and normally guys they are planning on keeping are signed by now.

Clark will be back, unless his play drops dramatically, he will be back. There is no reason for the Steelers to extend him right now, see how the season plays out, Clark has made it known he wants to be here, finish his career here, he will work with them to make a deal and if he performs again like he did last year, Steelers will sigh him in a heartbeat.

Well I'm not sure you disagree with me, I think you disagree with Thigpen82. I like putting Allen on the quicker guys inside, because he's the quickest guy we have outside of Ike, and maybe even quicker than Ike. And he's got good size and length to cover tight ends. My only point was that if we're playing a team without a major threat in the middle, but two good receivers outside, we should let Allen take the better player on the edge and bring Gay in to cover the lesser player in the middle. All three guys can play any spot, either side, inside or out, so we have the flexibility to do whatever.
