It wouldn't surprise me if DL was still holding the clipboard on his 80th birthday. The guy just doesn't seem to show any signs of slowing down. If I had to guess, I think he'll be back again next year at least.

While I have no doubt he can go that long, I just don't see Butler sticking around unless DL's departure is in the near future.

The article makes the point about Lebeau's old guard leaving... but maybe the chance of working with a re-energised, young defense makes the prospect of staying more exciting?

Whichever way it goes, though, you can be sure that Lebeau writes his own ticket.

I am DL age and have been retired for many years and love it. Hard for me to imagine still working at such a high level with so much energy and enthusiasm as DL does. He has accomplished so much in his career, SB rings, Hall Of Famer, highley respected by his players and other coaches, working for the best team in the NFL etc. , so what else does he want to accomplish, time for him to retire and let a younger person [KB] take over. Just my opinion.

While that's true, it's been true for a fair few years now...

I'm guessing the time Lebeau retires is the time he doesn't wake up in the morning and have that hunger for football. Hopefully, if and when that happens, the transition is smooth, and we don't have a case like Cowher's last season where he seemed to just be seeing it out.

If he loves his job, why would he quit, regardless of success?

If you have the energy and enthusiasm to perform the job @ a professional level, why retire?

If you can do it, I say go as long and hard as you can.

I believe Dick & Nancy know when he will take his bow. At 76 he holds an amazing resume of accomplishments. At some point in the near one would think they'd be thinking about spending their remainder with family travel etc. things that have been put on hold. I believe papa coach knows this could be the year or just around the corner for the perfect 7. When he does decide i will thank him for his service - dedication.

I think if it comes down to it they let KB walk for a guy that is the master. that's if DLB wants to remain.

as far as traveling, don't they do that 10 weeks or so out of the season? maybe he'll just want to go down to the river and do some cat fishing. LOL:shrug:

Mike Tomlin was only a DC for one year before becoming a head coach. Butler may be losing out on some of those chances by riding the coaching bench. Guessing when DL will retire is like guessing when JoePa was going to retire. Football is what they know, he is in good health, I'm just no seeing it. A friend of mine, after PSU went 8-4 last year wondered how they would have done had JoePa retired 5 years ago. All love and respect to DL, but with a new crop of players replacing the old guard, perhaps the Steelers would be better off with a new DC sooner than later.

DL will give up the defensive playbook when they pry it out of his cold, dead hands!

they talked about this when he hit 70 too. do you give up a top 7 defense every year to appease a guy that learned under the master, but has never done it before?

we have another LB coach in the wings that knows this defense too. we also have a DB coach that knows it. we definitely have a DL coach that knows it, so KB isn't the only game in town either.

I think we have made enough changes around our franchise qb. we need to make a serious run while these last guys are available to him. defensively too. stick around keith, I don't think DLB is done teaching all his stuff yet. this is a stable bunch of coaches we have right now and I for one want to see what they can do with these new toys in this defense.

They must be pretty high on KB though if they keep getting him to stay, 2 times now. I don't think they are retaining him just for his LB coaching skills. If he leaves though, hope that opens the door for Lake.

Butler isn't sticking around for nothing. I think he leaves sooner than later.
