Is this the real Battle? We all think this way but in doing so aren't we guilty of giving a roster spot to a player without him fighting for it.

McLendon IS the 1st string NT. The battle may be for 2nd string NT and Ta'amu seems to have the inside lane.

What about Woods? Woods is a DE being tested at NT. Hebron Fangupo is a 3-4 DE being tried out at NT. HHhhmmm!!

Is this the real Battle? For that DL swingman spot? I think so!! In my 53 man roster we keep 6 DL, 4 DE and 2 NT. Woods is on that list. He's a 4 year guy that has experience. He has zero PS eligibilty left.

I have Hebron on the PS as he's still "young" in NFL playing experience. Next year With Brett (nearing retirement) and Ziggy( trying to earn 2nd contract) and Heyward not being able to beat anybody out we'll need some DL battles.

Yep, the Camp Battle between Ta'amu and Fangupo is a mirage. Its between Fangupo vs Woods and not for this year, its setting up next years Battle!!!

    I agree, I think it's McLendon #1 and Ta'amu #2

WHy do you think Heyward will not get any better?

I think Fangupo' age (28) will be the odd man out, unless he just proves to be an absolute beast, which I don't think he will.

Hebron Fangupo would not hack it as a 3-4 DE. He is NT-like.

I wouldn't give Tammu the inside track to anything. He didn't impress me on or off the field at all.

I dunno why, I think Fangupo is really going to impress in camp. Just call it a hunch

I didn't mean to give the opinion Heyward won't get any better. It's just that He hasn't been able to beat out an aging Brett or underperforming Ziggy to this point.

Fangupo played his college career at 3-4 DE. That being said his size dictates chances are he won't be playing DE in the NFL but instead NT. Of course what size says and what actually happens aren't always the same.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Woods win the #2 spot, but obviously I'm pulling for Ta'amu. I think the team will give Woods every shot though, so that they'll be able to save an active roster spot come game day. Definitely a position to watch in the preseason games. I think Fangupo is staring at the PS, at best.

he played both positions at BYU.

don't forget omar lewis from florida is here too. he's pure NT material.

you have to remember casey was at his best at about 325-330. hoke was 305 at first and may have played around 310-320. it doesn't take a giant. quickness, stregnth and leverage are their friend.

woods knows the defense better then the rest. he could also free up a spot on defense. i think that's going to be key for this year. we want to keep some of this young talent around for a year, because we may need it next year. it gives them a year in the system.

ziggy, woods, mclendon and probably heyward could play NT if needed. all 5 can play DE also, adding keisel to the list.

    5 D-linemen,10 LB'ers,5 or 6 CB's, 4 or 5 safeties.

the practice squad is going to be hard to determine too this year. 8 spots, and lots of good young talent.

I can see alot of competition for different spots in training camp.
I just hope the coaches let this happen and give the players involved the proper
chance to show their talents. Lets have the most talented people on the field, not
the most experienced. Wishfull thinking I know LOL.

I agree and I'm hoping that it is "spirited" competion. I would love to see the coaches put a mean streak back in these players. I know it was missing last year.

This battle would be a "blast" to witness. I mean, we have some attitude, size, and mean streaks in there. Throw in some desire and stir.

    It's gonna get good...

Let us also consider how they play the 2-4 nickel.
A fresh beast off of the bench for pass rushing or "safety" gap control for a possible run is valuable.
