There are no teams that will hire Tomlin as head coach. We are stuck with him until his contract expires. Hopefully, no longer than that. The last little extension he got, which was difficult to comprehend, unfortunately delayed the desperately needed rebuild with a new leadership team.

I think you are underestimating Tomlin's value. And, the "New" Rich Owners willingness to pay for an experienced coach. The coaching staff is one area where these new Billionaire owners can spend as much money as they want. (Think Urban Meyer for $60 million)

If Tomlin retires for a year or two, I would expect the Steelers to get back about the same value that the Saints received when Sean Payton came back to the NFL.

The Denver Broncos traded for Sean Payton in January 2023 to become their head coach, sending the New Orleans Saints a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick. In exchange, the Broncos received Payton and a 2024 third-round pick from the Saints, as Payton was still technically under contract with New Orleans after stepping down as their coach the previous year.

If Tomlin is fired then there is no trade value, and the Steelers would be on the hook for his full salary as long as he stays out of the NFL.

Why would he want to jump right to another team when he could take 2.5 years off making $16MM / year?

Keep cashing that sweet Rooney money for doing nothing. Then jump back in if he gets a prime situation where a team wants a QB and has the 1st OA pick after they tank. Teams that do that usually have terrible culture. So bringing in a high-floor coach like Tomlin would probably be pretty attractive to them.

Seems like that's what high end coaches tend to do after they get fired. Or they just go into broadcasting where they get paid less, but only work a day a week for 20 weeks or so. Has to be soooo much better than the grind of being an NFL coach.

And if there are offsets for him getting employed somewhere else, maybe just go into business yourself by starting a podcast or something. I think a lot of people would listen to a Mike Tomlin podcast where he interviews ex-athletes or something.

My guess is that he doesn't go this route.

But I think Tomlin would kill it as a college coach. Where the most important skill is recruiting. MT would probably be amazing at charming the pants off of HS players and their parents. Especially since he's such a well known name at the NFL level.

Yup, he’d be a recruiting machine. I’m not sure why he wouldnt want to, those college gigs can be real cushy jobs when you get with a good program.

He’s already won a SB in the NFL, go build a winning program at the college level.

He should just join a network and BS everyone like he’s been doing to us for years with his catchy 1 liners. That’s the dream gig honestly.

I could see Tomlin taking another team to the Super Bowl. I'm over him but I could see him going to a team where the owner isn't going to let him captain the entire ship and will be more in control of the coordinators he hires. There are many who are still enamored with him and I imagine a significant amount of players who want to play for him. Add in an owner that spends money and I could see him being successful. I also find the idea of him coaching in college intriguing as well.
