Yes. He struggled somewhat as I recall.

In fact, I thought we drafted him officially as a guard, even though we planned to have him play both spots. I could be wrong about that, though. Funny that the article says he played so well at RT last year that he earned a shot at guard this year.

As mac will tell you (immediately, as soon as he gets here), he faired much better at guard than he did in his initial outing at LT, when he was really abused and looked like he'd won some sort of contest to play in a Steelers game.

    P.S. Max Starks sucks.

he played ot in college. the coaches were trying to convert him to guard because his build fit the position better in the nfl........... his struggles can be put down as a learning experience since he didn't have the position down yet...with another full ota and training camp, he should be much better inside........we all know how he stepped up at rt last yr. when adams went down though.... the kids definitely a keeper.

At the moment we have a lot of guys like this on our squad - faced a steep learning curve, seemed to do ok, promise much for the future. This can only be a good thing.

I always take these things for what they are....COMPLETE FLUFF.....Good to see Beard and Troy showing up...the rest...eh......the young guys get all the snaps early....guys changing position get all the snaps early...

Then by training camp...the begin to fall back into the order we mostly expect.

Fun to read and to hope....but it is what it is

You're not baiting me into another one of these. Just remember that I was never a big Starks fan. I know he was inconsistent, and at times downright terrible, and we can agree on that much. My point of view is that he was better than Jon Scott, and did have stretches where he was a big help to this team. And kind of the way I was forced into defending Mike Wallace all last year by people misrepresenting history, you forced me to defend Starks by never giving him credit for anything, including bailing us out in 2011. I don't think you said one scrap of positive words about that. You just waited for him to have a bad game and then complained about his conditioning, and then talked about how Scott would have done better. Okay, you are going to bait me into another one of these. Dammit.

Yes, he had lots of bad games, and some bad years, and at times I was his biggest critic. I remember one year on the old board (I think 2010) my prediction for the What will be first play of the first game thread was, "Either a Mendenhall run up the gut or an 80 yard bomb to Wallace, but either way, Max Starks will be beaten badly on the play." I was on him like I was on David Johnson. And on top of all that, the FO brutally butchered negotiations with Max to the point where we were paying him $8 million to sit on the bench. But I give credit where it's due. He was a part of two championship teams, and I remember him playing well during those runs, not just coasting like Darnell Stapleton and Justin Hartwig. He contributed to our Super Bowl wins, he didn't hold us back like those guys did. And yeah, in 2011 Jon Scott played 3 terrible games in weeks 1-3, and Ben was not going to make it through the season. Disagree with me if you like about Scott's performance, but Kevin Colbert is the one who rang Starks' doorbell and signed him to a contract in October. Ben's blind side became relatively safe again for most of the rest of the season. Crappy conditioning or not, gradual decline towards January or not, Starks made a massive difference when he stepped in week 5 and helped the offensive line be a little less useless. Against the Ravens he completely shut down Terrell Suggs. Even with occasional bad games against elite pass rushers (SF, DEN), it is clear from previous tape that Scott would have faired as badly, or worse. And all we ever got from you on the subject was that Scott had a couple good games in 2010 and Starks is getting fatter and missed a block the other day. So I don't know why don't know why you never saw the saving done by Starks, because the rest of the world did, and it was staring you right in the face.

Nice link and I agree with you on Brett, Troy and even the projection of Wheaton.

I disagree with the article about Beachum. His versatility has proven nothing except he struggles with it. It was his surprise and unexpected good play @ RT last season that has earned him a roster spot this season. They, the coaches are hoping he can be that versatile guy and they gambled with Legs in hopes he'd be successful. If he couldn't do it they'd return and sign their one trick pony Legs but now that option is gone and Pouncey has a history of missing games. I just don't feel comfortable putting this offense and OL on the 2nd year Beechum. I truly hope they have another option @ center come training camp.

Let me be clear, I'm pulling for Beechum and hope he succeeds as that versatile guy along the OL. I just feel we have better options at OG/C and that will hurt Beechum in a couple years, he'll never be a LT and if he doesn't become the starter @ RT by the time his contract ends he may be in trouble.

Al woods is a nice suprise and he is one whose versatility is gonna help. We'll probably keep 6 DL, How well Woods does as the back-up NT will determine our # 6 DL.

first off i never said jon scott was better. i said he was as good as starks.

neither were good but thats what we kept bringing back for some reason.

love max all you want but one team mistakenly signed him. he sure sat an aweful long time for such a savior of a LT. i guess the other 30 teams just don't see it either. why was max never signed here longterm over his time here? love him if you guys want but you will never convince me he was a good starter.

it's not all about sacks as we have been over too. the hits and hurries have gone up too. ben has been on the run from day one and max has been a starter until this year. we will see.

I'm not getting hyped by players running around in shorts and no pads.
