The offense’s inability to sustain drives is killing this team.

We are averaging 55 snaps a game on offense and our time of possession is at or near the bottom. Conversely our defense is averaging just under 70 snaps. The defense has played so many snaps it’s negated any benefit of a bye week. If this continues by the end of the season they’ll have played over 2 whole extra games worth of snaps. The offense must start sustaining drives. They don’t even necessarily have to result in points.just eat clock and give the defense a break.

Both side of the ball deserve the blame for the time of possession

The steelers are last in play per drive on offense(last in time of possession per drive)
31st for the most play per drive on defense(27th in time of possession)

Because in your OP,you blame mostly the offense for the poor time of possession when the defense deserve major blame for that too

My stats were time of possession and play per drive if you don't read correctely

Do you think the time just magically disappears? Obviously when the offense can’t sustain drives the defense is the field more. Which in turn leads to them playing more snaps. Which wears them down. Can you figure out without any more help what happens next?

Dude go away until you can actually add something of value to a conversation. 10,000 posts of some variation of Tomlin sucks is tired. Seriously go play in some other sandbox

The defense are on the field at 6.8 play per drive,31st in the NFL,so they deserve some blame for that too

Definitely agree. According to teamrankings.com, we rank 31st in TOP at 27:00 - only the Bengals are worse (26:49), while the Chargers lead the league (33:35). We did a lot better last year, sitting just above league median at 30:31.

It seems they made one of two mistakes this year: either they thought this version of Smith's offense would yield better results, or they failed to acquire a WR2 they felt comfortable enough with to stay out of the heavy packages. It's nice to have a TE room where each is a threat in the passing game, but in the modern era you still need more to your scheme than that.

Right now they look rudderless on offense, something Smith was criticized for in Atlanta, where he had Robinson, London, Pitts and Jonnu (and maybe Mooney).

Indiana's brother. Only he took a shine to ancient offensive schemes instead of historical relics.

Don't let others lead you astray.
His sister Grace and brother Davy are better known outside of the building but

Arthur Jones gets a ton more criticism.

Keep up with the Joneses Heinz

They do, but hopefully the safety combination of Ramsey and Dugger is truly helping to stabilize the back end and isn’t just a 2-week anomaly.

Going with only Metcalf and a collection of guys who should be no more than a No. 3 or No. 4 receiver was always a mistake. I've been saying that since they foolishly traded Pickens.

I dont buy into it being scheme problem. We are seeing more use of 2 and 3 personnel across the league. Defenses reacted to wide open passing attacks by using more coverage players on the field. Now offenses are reacting to that change by using more 12 and 13 personnel. That should be our bread and butter. However, we keep shooting ourselves in the foot allowing opposing defenses to keep lighter and faster defenses on the field. We stop killing ourselves and the opponents have to pull those coverage guys off the field which in turn opens up the passing game. On more than one occasion weidl and Kahn have talked about how they envision this team playing football(bully ball).

    We're aware ;)

I just want to see firsthand what the receivers are doing on some of these routes. While not to Pickens' level, there's talent in Austin and Wilson - enough to justify more opportunities than what they've gotten. In my opinion, anyway.

I think maybe Wilson will get there at some point. I think Austin has shown he is no better than a No. 3 and should probably be No. 4. He has the occasional big game, but disappears far too often. He doesn't have great hands, either. He has juggled a few and his Dwight "Hands of" Stone impression against the Chargers was a killer. I was a big defender of Austin. I hoped he could be more, but he is no more than a useful backup.

Sure, but I think of play-calling as part of the overall scheme. Right now it's not so much the 12/13-p we're running, it's what we're trying to do with it. What are we setting up? What the key strengths and weaknesses of the opponent and how are we attacking it?

Sounds like the same thing your're calling out.

How often are the plays called by smith actually run by Rodgers?
