Obviously it's only day two of OTAs, and way too early to speculate, but I thought this was worth discussing. By more than one first hand account, Dwyer has shown up in what appears to be- less than peak physical form.

Jim Wexell described Dywer as "still pudgy", and Mark Kaboly said that 'he looks to have returned to his weight of a couple years ago...he's definitely gained some weight'. On the other hand, Redman has been described as losing weight and looking more muscular. In a radio interview this morning, Kaboly said Redman 'dropped 10-15 pounds, and added a lot of muscle', and something to the effect of him 'not looking like that short yardage pounder now'.

Were the draft day reports of Dwyer being on the trading block related to his present physical condition? Will we see Redman getting the majority of the carries in September while Bell grows into the role? Thoughts?

Up until this point I haven't heard anything about Dwyer being out of shape/etc...that he's been working out and doing good. Just because he may be "pudgy" doesn't mean he's out of shape or anything of the sort though. So for now I take these "observations" with a grain of salt.

As far as September...I hope they just put Bell in and run with it so to speak.

Jerome Bettis was less than impressive looking with his body type. He was just a little good.

About the only thing that Dwyer has in common with Bettis is that they both wore Steelers Jerseys.

If I had to pick, I would say just based purely on my opinion, Redman wants it more. He's had to prove himself to even make the team. Given where Dwyer was drafted, he's kinda had a free ride up till this point. The oportunity was Dwyer's for the taking last year, and he kept taking himself out of the game. If he couldn't get his crap together when he had a great shot of being the starter last year with Mendy injured, he just doesn't have the drive.
I want to like Dwyer, I like his skill set. But it seems he's squandered the opportunities he's gotten.

Ask yourself this question. If both Redman and Dwyer were released, who would sign somewhere else first? My guess is probably Redman because of his attitude.

The optimistic way of looking at things is that Dwyer realized he'll never be a speed back, and gained weight to go all in on power back mode. The more likely scenario is that he's an idiot.

If those reports are true, I'm disappointed. All the signs last season were that Dwyer could develop into a high calibre back IF he kept working on his physical conditioning. Let's hope he proves those reports wrong once the pads get on.

That disappoints me, Dwyer told me personally on twitter he'd be in the best shape of his life this season :/

If that's true then Dwyer is a talker and not a doer. I see his tweets on the home page all the time about how it's time to get up and go to work, time to work on being great and so on and now hearing this? Guess it will sort itself out in camp.

If the first couple of days of OTAs are any indication, it will probably come down to injuries again

all you have to do is look at the photo's of the OTA's on the steelers main site. i've said all along redman is the better back and getting and staying in shape is part of it. redman looks the best i've seen him. dwyer looks huge.

yes i agree, gruden, the only thing dwyer has in commen with bettis is the jersey. especially with them talking about getting wider with the offense and the run game.

You guys just reminded me of how every announcer who saw Dwyer break a tackle last season started comparing him to Bettis. God, they're stupid.

They were just talking about this on ESPN 970, too. David Todd was saying that Dywer looked like he 'has a little bit of a paunch'. I guess Redman lost 10 lbs and wants to lose 5 more. He's been working with Ron Jones of FitToGo in Tampa Bay, and is going back down after OTAs to continue working on speed and explosion.

    You're right. It's noticeable.

you can see alot of guys in t-shirts and shorts. you can see who's been working hard amongst all of them. some of those young linemen are big boys that look pretty mobile. long for one is a big boy. decastro looks bigger muscle wise, to me from last year. woodley looks a little better. it's worth the look.

Dwyer looks like he needs to go to fat camp. McClendon looks to be an absolute beast. Woodley and troy look to be in good shape.

This is exactly what I thought about when I read the first post. I remember you talking about this and I am thinking you even wound up posting the tweets didn't you? Also wasn't he sending out a lot of tweets of how he was gonna get in shape and all that? Just give it to Bell. If this guy can't get it done it's time to try another guy. We can't afford to keep him around if he's gonna show up out of shape.

You probably have to throw Barron Batch into the equation too. All three are pretty much the same player when it comes down to it.

I really like Redman, but today's offenses don't have the patience to stick with a power back who needs a fair amount of carries to get on a roll.

Really I think it comes down to who is going to stay healthy. All of them have had their issues.

I'm wondering if they get all 3 guys in camp and decide they would rather have Ahmad Bradshaw? That UDRFA from USC will be in the mix too.

Dedication, I am tired of the Dwyers, Woodleys of the world. I really have no time for these guys
if they cannot keep in playing shape. I want to see a fine tuned machine out there. If I was the Steelers
and I am pretty sure they do this. I would have clauses in all players contracts that they must report @
a certain weight and be ready to WORK @ game level expertise. If they don't, I want to know why.
Is this fair considering the amount of money these players are making? LOL Folks Dwyer is not
even on the same PLANET as the Bus. Bussy is a HOF 2nd best big back of all time.

It's easy to say he's going to get in shape, but a lazy athlete is a problem that often doesn't go away. It's a mindset that is tough to get away from. Either you're lazy or you're not, it's not easy to flip between the two.

Dwyer is clearly not interested in dieting and working out and I have doubts he ever will.

Maybe he has been working out really hard... just celebrating his effort with a Primanti's each time.

Of all the things I've posted on this board, it upsets me that my 2000th post was about Dwyer eating a sandwich.

Am I the only one who thinks Redman losing weight might be a bad thing?

If he gets faster, then great... but if not he's just going to be less effective in short yardage, which is where his paycheck comes from. I could be wrong, his conditioning could be a lot better... just a thought.

redman can do alot more then be a short yardage back. he's also a good receiver and blocker in pass protection. his drop in weight and addition of muscle will help his speed. i'll bet a dollar to a doughnut he's faster then a 4.7 now.

we also have mcneal and LSH in the mix with bell, batch and redman, even if dwyer doesn't make it. it also saves us 1.3 mil. if we cut him. if the line blocks well , it won't matter who is running the ball, holes should be there. batch and redman are healthy now and thats something we couldn't say last year.

It's a good thing. With the last year of his contract coming up, and Mendenhall leaving, getting leaner and focusing on agility training was a really smart move.

He's been working on getting faster this offseason, and from what I've read, the results are tangible~

"RAC Mendenhall may be gone, but the new Run-After-Catch stud is Isaac Redman, who’s showing off quick feet after the catch due to a drastic weight loss." http://pit.scout.com/2/1293896.html

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I didn't like the weight I was,” Redman said Wednesday at the end of the Steelers' second of 10 organized team activities.
So Redman did something about it.

He spent the offseason with speed and agility specialist Ron Jones in Tampa, Fla., working on transforming his body.

“The goal was to get more explosive and get quicker, faster and to drop weight,” Redman said.
Redman dropped 10 pounds — he was listed at 230 last year — and wants to get down another five. Redman plans to return to Tampa following minicamp in mid-June to resume his workouts with Jones.
