    Oregon State still uses a quarters system and Wheaton hasn't officially graduated. So does that mean he still has classes/exams to take or they just haven't had a ceremony yet? Same thing happened to Decastro last year (and Adams?) Wish they could pass a rule to allow them to participate, these camps are so important to rookies.

    Yeah I was thinking that happened to someone last year too. It was actually DeCastro I think wasn't it? So what if he just said he wasn't gonna go back to school and showed up with the team? Would there be some kind of ramifications for doing that? I'm not saying he should do that I'm just curious if there's some stipulation that says he can't do that.

    I agree if he has already satisfies his obligation to get his diploma. I admire those that stay in school to graduate,that shows a commitment to an organization. If he's clear he should be able to practice.

    NFL rules prohibit rookies from participating until their school conducts final exams. Since Oregon State is one of those "Quarter System" schools, he suffers. Here's Oregon's final exam schedule~

    http://catalog.oregonstate.edu/ChapterDetail.aspx?key=371#Section3797

    Here's more on the seemingly archaic NFL rules that bar rookies from participating:

    • Players who participated in college football in the 2012 season as graduate students, or who have already graduated or who will graduate prior to May 13, may not participate in any activities other than the three-day minicamp until May 13;

    • If final examinations at a player's school conclude prior to May 13, the player may not participate in any activities other than the three-day minicamp until May 13, even if the player has left or leaves school;

    • If final examinations at a player's school conclude after May 13, the player may not participate in any activities other than the three-day minicamp until after the player's final day of examinations. If the player has left or leaves school, he may not participate in any activities until after the final day of examinations at his school. These restrictions do not apply to a graduate student, who is permitted to report to his club and participate fully in a Rookie Football Development Program beginning on May 13.
    It was DeCastro. Adams and Ta'amu were also subject to those rules. Stamford, Ohio State, Washington, and Oregon State are schools that come to mind. Andrew Luck missed OTA's. If I remember correctly, Santonio Holmes missed OTA's when he was a rookie because of the rule, too.

    For a wr this isn't horrible Holmes had to do the same thing and did well his rookie year. A route is a route and there is plenty of time for him and Ben to get their timing down.

    I like the rule.

    For real students that want to finish their school year it stops NFL teams from demanding attendance. Look at Spence; his career may be over.

    Maybe teams should do a weekend camp(s) at this time, and the NFL should allow rookie college student players to participate on their days off, or days there are no classes. Memorial Day weekend would be a good time. Flights are quick; Friday night in and Sunday night out.

    So if I am understanding that correctly, even if a player has taken all his exams he still can't participate? I don't care if he has exams left or not, he should be allowed to attend camp, as long as it doesn't interfere with an athlete from taking their exam, there is no harm in allowing them to participate.

    Ridiculous rule, should be changed.

    adams was also in this boat last year with DD. ohio state has since changed though. there were a few schools that were like that. carter missed his rookie OTA's that year because of the strike. butler and DLB talked about how much they missed and it set them back. sly may have been involved in that one too.

    it is what it is and teams know if they draft from these schools, you start out in the hole with these players. the good thing is there aren't too many left.

    I agree. And to be fair, it's not the rule that's out of sync with things, it's the colleges who have an odd timetable. (I'm guessing it has an effect on students in competition with other colleges, either in sport or in life in general.)

    It's no big deal in mini camp all they do is run around in shorts and no pads. He can make it to the OTA's later.
