I would still rather go for the FG there; too many bad things can happen on a 4th down call.

Didn't Campbell and the Lions lose a playoff game by repeatedly going for it on 4th downs.

Their defense gave up 3 TD,1 FG in the final 4 drives of the game

Need to trust Rodgers in this situation....He has the lowest interception rate in NFL history

The Lions only lost the game by 3 points. If they would have kicked FG's instead of keep failing on fourth down conversations while in FG range they could have won. The Lions were up 14 and in easy FG range that would have made it a 3 score game. Instead Campbell went for it and failed and the whole momentum of the game changed.

It was a 48-49 yards FG both time,so it was not a gimme, not for a kicker who was out of the league after that until two weeks ago when he signed with the Colts because their kicker got injured.

I think Campbell had more faith in their offense in this fourth down and 2 situation than in his kicker, and I can't blame him, especially since the Lions had a lot of success all year on his fourth down and shorts situation, so he continued to stick with his winning formula... It didn't work that time, but it paid off so many times, and like I said, the Lions had a kicker who was out of a job the following season.

No. I don't even necessarily believe that he was the 2nd best HC back then. Just that there wasn't really a great argument for others in a similar tier (like those you listed).

He gets the benefit of there not being a Billy B these days. But Reid has taken that crown. Unsurprisingly, the HC with a QB that's head and shoulders above everyone else that plays way below market value is again obviously the best HC in the league.

I think Tomlin is still an above average coach. We've been making chicken salad out of the play we've had at QB since Ben got hurt.

I do think that he's still above average to elite at motivating players. He hasn't had a team quit despite having some pretty bad teams (especially QB play) recently. I think that's what's gotten us into the playoffs a couple times when teams I thought were better ended up missing the tournament.

But if he's still in the 2nd tier (and he's probably a tier below that now), it's because that tier has gotten bigger with little difference between most other above average HCs. But as I said in another post upthread, I think Tomlin has become stagnant on D. Seems like most teams say they know what we're going to play and that our terminology is the same as it has been for a long while.

We need very good coordinators for Tomlin to thrive. Just like Cowher. I think our best / most innovative D (post-LeBeau) was when we brought in Flores. That's the kind of DC I think we need re: creativity. Just like Tomlin and Cowher both had their best defenses with LeBeau even though they were both defensive guys (certainly having Troy and co was a big part of this).

Not sure if I'm in the minority or not, but I think Smith is a good OC for us. But I wish the team would get serious about getting (and / or not giving away) a legit WR2 in the offseasons.

Yes, and it doesn’t just apply to talent. It also applies to situations. If things are going well, you can be pretty sure they’re going to take a sharp turn downward, and if things are looking grim they often take improbable turns for the better. However, it’s gotten to the point where you can bet your house that if we make the playoffs, we’ll be drubbed immediately by whoever we draw in the first round. We’re the easiest out every year.

Goes back to Cowher ball when people would talk about him playing to not lose instead of playing to win. Tomlin has no fight in him as far as keeping the foot on their opponents throat.

A lot depends on the distance as well. I am somewhat interested in seeing more of the push play on 4th and short.

Bring in Rudolph for that play. He’s a big strong dude.

Not if Arthur Smith is going to call a bad play like he did against the Vikings.

I saw Arizona basically hand Green Bay a win this past weekend, they went for it on 4th down near midfield late in the 4th quarter and failed. Green Bay scores a TD to take the lead Arizona would've been better off punting.

I think this is mostly because basically all the good QBs are in the AFC.

Look at: Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Burrow, and Stroud. Basically none of these guys has lost to QBs not on this list since their first playoff appearance.

The reason that BUF and BAL are frustrated with Allen and Lamar is that they have to play Mahomes all the time. If these guys were drafted by NFC teams, I think it's pretty likely they have a SB appearance under their belt.

We maybe should have beaten CLE in the playoffs. But I think everyone knows that we were a pretty bad team that year. And once teams realized that Ben didn't have much accuracy on intermediate or deep throws, they realized that all they had to do was cover the short stuff. After the injury Ben was still good at presnap reads. And he could get the ball out quick. But he wasn't good at making throws into tight coverage.

After the CLE game, we got into the playoffs as the 7th seed. We played old-man Ben against Mahomes. Then Mason against Allen. Then Russ against Lamar.

Football is mostly about whether or not your QB is good (just like the best goalie usually wins in hockey and why that great rotation the Dodgers have is likely to beat my Jays).

Rodgers is probably the best option we've had since Ben got hurt. But he's probably still not a top 10 QB in the league (if everyone's healthy), right? Or if he is, he's toward the bottom of that top 10 list.

We certainly need substantial improvement from this D. But we pretty much always look terrible on the road on Thursdays.

Andy Reid is the only HC with any claim to be 'better' than Mike Tomlin currently.

The killer B’s absolutely had at least two super bowl appearances in them. Whoever could have got them there is better than Tomlin. I imagine a few on that list could do it.

Tomlin made the playoffs with members of the 'Killer B's' out due to injury.

2017!!! That is the only game all members of the 'Killer B's' played in a playoff game together. Every other time at least 1 member was out of the game due to injury.

Just ask @Steelersfan43@Steelersfan43. He can tell you exactly who played and when.

That’s wrong, Ben, AB and Bell played in 4 playoff games together. But it goes beyond that. Tomlin has won just 3 playoff games with Ben Roethlisberger, between 2011 and 2021. Most of that at the height of his career. And that was with a loaded offense, All pro line, and for the most part, a top 10 defense. No excuses for a ‘great’ coach.

i’ll ask you again, are you happy with 3 playoff wins in the last 14 years?
